I was thinking about it... In "One Of Them" when the clock hit zero and all the symbols started popping up and we all hear that wierd sound like there was a major lockdown about to occur something hit me. A few episodes back Locke and Micheal discovered that there were blast doors in the hatch. I think this has a mahor significance to my idea. Just maybe when the clock hits zero and all those symbols appear again the Hatch will shut its blast doors and something will launch from the island. An emergency procedure or something. In the Dharma orientation video when Dr.Marvin Candle said that they will try to avoid another incident so all prosedure must be followed. This is related to my theory.

Is this like in the James Bond movie:You Only Live Twice? Where Blofeld (villain) has a volcano space launching LAIR.

IMO, you're definitely on the right track

Consider the satellite weapon theory. Satellites in geo-synchronous orbit finish 1 orbit in about 108 mins. So every 108 minutes there is an opportunity OR a requirement to contact it. (This IMO is the likeliest source of "the incident"). So where is the sat at the various points along it's orbit, if the "numbers" are merely corresponding to minutes of travel?

Assume the satellite is traveling East to West and is starting somewhere in the Pacific Ocean. The "numbers" correspond with major world capitals/cities:

0 minutes = Above the island
4 mins: Tokyo
8 min: Bejing
15 mins: India
16 min: Middle east Cities
23 min: European capitals
42 mins: DC/New York
108 mins: island again

This is my theory. The hatches are missile silos now used as science labs and world peace enforcement silos. Hanso built them. He then told the world's leaders that they best behave, and not threaten mankind with nuke war or he'd blast them with an EMP from his own satellite. The control point of that satellite is off the grid on an island WHICH IS HIDDEN FROM DETECTION, due to it's electromagnetic anomalies and technology. So:

The entry of the code into the hatch computer does potentially a few different things...but the following is my pet fave:

It causes the islands invisibilty to be maintained by 'zapping' the spy sattelites that are twirling around the planet looking for the island; the worlds powers will not be happy to have some rogue power hold a gun to it's collective forehead, and would be out to find the island....WHEN THE BUTTON IS NOT PUSHED, THE BLAST DOORS DROP DOWN to protect the hatchees from attack, as their location will be learned.

This has happened once already...now referred to as the "Incident"...the resulting attack poisons the island's environment is, for a while quaranteened...lest ye risk acquiring the "sickness". This same sickness renders you infertile, so that for your tribe to go on, so you must 'acquire' any available children...

So...wouldn't the button not being puches mean that a) no one is alive to push it or b) someone is prevented from pushing it?

If it is a rocket...would it launch the computer room, with it's glass ceiling? With no one in it, since no one's pushing the button. Or would the rocket be somewhere else?

I think the rocket is located somewhere else. Maybe on the top of one of those mountains or in a Bunker not yet discovered. We will soon find out....

I saw on Discovery Channel a few years back that an eon ago the South Pole was the dominant pole and when it switched North it caused the magnetasphere to weaken and allow the sun's rays to melt the caps. The show said that soon the North would swing dominance back to the south and we would have devastation again. Perhaps the hatches are protection against this, hence the magnetism, Sayid's compass being off, and the Polar bear. The Oersted Sattelite circles the earth every 108 minutes, maybe the computer is communicating with it somehow.

I really don't think there are missiles located on the island. First of all, an island isn't the best place to build and bury missile silos. Second, it wouldn't be good to have some rocket or death laser on a looping 108 minute timer requiring someone to be there to input the special code or cities will be destroyed.
