Dr. Jack Shephard

Dr. Jack Shephard is often seen as the main character of the series. He is a spinal surgeon and the de facto leader of the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815. Jack has control issues and trouble dealing with situations that he cannot fix. However, this attitude of solving problems through reason has given him the ability to function well in crisis. Sometimes, if he feels guilt or pain over a situation he can't fix himself, he will do anything he can to fix it, even borderlining on obsessive. Jack is, most of the time, in control of his life, emotions and situation he is in and is able to keep a cool head in tense situations. Jack is also the half brother of Claire Littleton, although neither of them is aware of this. Jack has formed very strong bonds with Kate and Juliet while he has been on the Island.

Default Another Time...

Did anyone else catch Hurley's comments after the radio gets repaired and he and Sayid are on the beach listening to an old song? Hurley mentions something about the song coming from "another time" then quickly adds that he is just kidding.

Could it be possible that by being brought to the island it somehow brought them back in time? It may be a long shot but it sounds possible:
1- Ana-Lucia mentions that the Army knife they find on the others is from 1979
2- All the vinyl records in the hatch are pretty old and Hurley mentions he has never heard of any of the musicians before.
3- The slave ship is pretty old, I still haven't figure this one out yet but how did it get there?
4- This one is really a long shot: Locke's legs now work. If they went back in time before whatever accident caused his legs not to work, then they should logically work again.
5- Locke mentioned that the island gave them all the chance to start over or make a new life. What better way to start over than go back in time?
6- I still haven't figured out how the Nigerian drug plane fits in here because if they went back in time it shouldn't be there yet. However when Locke got close to it his legs stopped working again (maybe a disruption in the space time continuum? sorry little joke there from Back to the Future)
7- The film projector in the hatch is pretty old. I mean who uses film projectors anymore or vinyl records for that matter?
8- I've read on several spoiler sites that the writters have mentioned not to assume that Lost takes place in present time or 2004-2005.

Of course this could all be explained by the fact that the island was setup by Dharma in the 1970's and therefore everying on the island is just old. What does everyone else think?

I want to say it was just set up in the 70's and that explains the vinyl -by the way,not that old, I remember when that was all we had- and the old
computer system - I remember when the math department in my high school got one, just one, but we thought it was really high tech - and they have just never bothered to upgrade. Unlike today, they figure what they have works, so why upgrade just for the sake of upgrading. I can see leaving the computer intact, but why as replacements have shown up have they not
asked for more updated reading (not that you can replace classics) material
and entertainment such as VCR's. Someone is replacing the food, so why
not entertainment options?
This takes me back to the "Asleep/dead at the switch theory in which the
ones in charge of the experiment are no longer there, but the ones' carrying
out the actions haven't been told to stop. Like those Japenese soldiers cut
off from the rest of the world who don't know the war is over and continue
to fight and take prisoners.
Desmond (where the #$@%! is Desmond) never had any contact with anyone from Dharma, he was told by Kelvin to watch the film and he did,
then Desmond showed Jack and Locke. Maybe Kelvin never talked to anyone from Dharma either, he was told by his partner to watch the film and the guy
before him etc.

I think that you should add to your theory, why they would go back in time? Did it just happen *snap* like that? Or did something cause it? Was it a space time continuim?

Rousseau has been on the Island 16 years, so that would mean she go there in the early 60's? You have some solid points, but I beg to differ on the Island being that far back in time.

I believe that the records were written in to show that Dharma was not a new project and that not much has happened in the hatch for many years. Plus the writers seem to like those styles of music.

I don't think they went back in time- I'm just saying that when the original hatch was built what we see - record player, ping-pong table etc. were
the most up to date amenities. The experiment has continued, but no-one
has bothered to bring them up to date.

I think the theory that they are dead or asleep is totally off! There is wayyy too much detail and information crammed in this fantastic show for somebody to dream about. Also the theory that they were somehow warped back 35 years in time sounds more realistic but has its many flaws. One being the modern washing machine in the hatch.

Well the writers have assured us that they are NOT dead and they are NOT having a dream. They are all living this together, no OZ stuff.

I don't think I made myself clear. I dont mean somebody is literally asleep and dreaming this whole thing. I am saying it ties in with the idea that
the ones who started the project are no longer running it but the people on the island ( Others, whoever we hear whispering, whoever is running the
security system, whoever is stocking the pantry or a combination of these)
doesnt realize the experiment is over and so now it is just running
without anybody really in charge. That's why all the 70's stuff
hasn't been updated but the food keeps coming. Some hatches are still
operating and some are abandoned etc.
