Dr. Jack Shephard
Dr. Jack Shephard is often seen as the main character of the series. He is a spinal surgeon and the de facto leader of the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815. Jack has control issues and trouble dealing with situations that he cannot fix. However, this attitude of solving problems through reason has given him the ability to function well in crisis. Sometimes, if he feels guilt or pain over a situation he can't fix himself, he will do anything he can to fix it, even borderlining on obsessive. Jack is, most of the time, in control of his life, emotions and situation he is in and is able to keep a cool head in tense situations. Jack is also the half brother of Claire Littleton, although neither of them is aware of this. Jack has formed very strong bonds with Kate and Juliet while he has been on the Island.

I want to say it was just set up in the 70's and that explains the vinyl -by the way,not that old, I remember when that was all we had- and the old
computer system - I remember when the math department in my high school got one, just one, but we thought it was really high tech - and they have just never bothered to upgrade. Unlike today, they figure what they have works, so why upgrade just for the sake of upgrading. I can see leaving the computer intact, but why as replacements have shown up have they not
asked for more updated reading (not that you can replace classics) material
and entertainment such as VCR's. Someone is replacing the food, so why
not entertainment options?
This takes me back to the "Asleep/dead at the switch theory in which the
ones in charge of the experiment are no longer there, but the ones' carrying
out the actions haven't been told to stop. Like those Japenese soldiers cut
off from the rest of the world who don't know the war is over and continue
to fight and take prisoners.
Desmond (where the #$@%! is Desmond) never had any contact with anyone from Dharma, he was told by Kelvin to watch the film and he did,
then Desmond showed Jack and Locke. Maybe Kelvin never talked to anyone from Dharma either, he was told by his partner to watch the film and the guy
before him etc.

I don't think I made myself clear. I dont mean somebody is literally asleep and dreaming this whole thing. I am saying it ties in with the idea that
the ones who started the project are no longer running it but the people on the island ( Others, whoever we hear whispering, whoever is running the
security system, whoever is stocking the pantry or a combination of these)
doesnt realize the experiment is over and so now it is just running
without anybody really in charge. That's why all the 70's stuff
hasn't been updated but the food keeps coming. Some hatches are still
operating and some are abandoned etc.
