He may have been one of the Others or from D.I., or maybe (and this is some in-th-moment theorizing) Jacob is a historical figure that we just haven't been told about but that everyone on the island has heard of.
Like Moses for the Island, thats what I think Jacob is. Whether people are alive or not seems to have very little bearing on their ability to communicate.

Hey Trismog, you may be on to somehting here. Maybe that's why we see, or at least strongly hinted at, Amelia Earhart. Maybe Jacob is someone from LONG ago who disappeared... and over the years became the chosen one.

Right...I mean, the only thing we know about Jacob for sure is that he knows (or knew) a lot about the island. Logically, I would say he was the child of a member of the Black Rock, or a direct member. If you remember his shack, I watched it again and it really looks like all the stuff in there is similar to the artifacts we saw on the Black Rock.
As far as historical figures, there have been plenty of explorers lost at sea, so perhaps he was one. I think the island "moved" in the past and appeared right on the Black Rock. It would explain it's inland location.
