Cooper/Sawyer was a Richard chosen one

The real Sawyer probably had the gift that Locke and his mother had. I bet the man from tallahassee was always on the radar from when Richard was scoping out Locke from birth, from the test of the items, and from the brochure at the Mittelos island science camp.

Cooper probably had a little shine to him. That was why he was so successful at conning. I bet Richard and the island knew who he was a long time ago. So when he was playing around with Emily, they watched over that relationship. The inevitable child with gifts of hers and his would be special.

it's neither. If you watch the show you can see that Richard was trying to source sensitives to Island dynamics on his main stream civilization jaunts. I think Richard was like Ben, he "used" to get dreams. But his time as the leader was passing, they needed new medium blood, the same way the island now wants Hurley, Walt, and Locke.

In the Shining, Stephen King introduces the idea that people with a little "shine" can use it to evade trouble or work cons. I think Cooper was a target and together with Emily's psychic abilities was a predictive possibility of abilities in whatever child they'd have.

Richard knows all about the man who fathered locke. The fact that they knew who Cooper was and how to deliver him is proof of that. Cooper's bent morality would have made him someone who gets on the list. Someone who can follow the island "rules". Maybe he didn't make the cut. But where is Mr. Locke? Emily's dad?

But aren't you curious if they engineered the Emily/Cooper match? Why didn't Richard adopt the baby and take him straight to the island?

Well it can't just be 'neither'

What we all do is combining available info with personal/collective thoughts, so it is speculation, logically. That is unless everything is crystal clear, which is a rare case with LOST anyways.

And I do watch the show.
