Yes and No. I think there is only one, although it takes different shapes and shows different images depending on who it is stalking.

Hmmm... maybe. I think that the monster is meant to instill tremendous fear, and it will customize its attack to suit whoever it encounters. Eko, being a man who "fear(s) no evil", was not afraid of the beast itself or the images, therefore it did not take him.

OR...

What if the monster just reflects whatever the person is thinking? Maybe that's what was running through Eko's mind at a time of tremendous stress - kind of like your life flashing before your eyes.

It was the same black smoke. Kate and Jack saw it just before it captured
Locke. Then when Kate threw down the dynamite more black smoke
came out. Locke must have seen the same thing as Eko did.

I don't understand. You talk of these nano bots and i get that but the one thing that makes my mind boggle were the flashes inside the blakc smog. They werei mages of Eko's past. I feel the black smog was being fed fro mthe ground that scanned Eko and saw all of his most important memories. But i dont know why it left him unharmed. Maybe the same reason it left Locke unharmed...
