Dr. Jack Shephard

Dr. Jack Shephard is often seen as the main character of the series. He is a spinal surgeon and the de facto leader of the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815. Jack has control issues and trouble dealing with situations that he cannot fix. However, this attitude of solving problems through reason has given him the ability to function well in crisis. Sometimes, if he feels guilt or pain over a situation he can't fix himself, he will do anything he can to fix it, even borderlining on obsessive. Jack is, most of the time, in control of his life, emotions and situation he is in and is able to keep a cool head in tense situations. Jack is also the half brother of Claire Littleton, although neither of them is aware of this. Jack has formed very strong bonds with Kate and Juliet while he has been on the Island.

Default Desmond needs to die.

"If you don't push the button.... all of us will die"
Who the heck is us. It seems to me that a whole lot of this mess and a lot less deaths would have happened if not for Desmond. The ones who didn't make it from the original crash, Charlie, Bonnie, the other Looking Glass chick, basically Naomi, and... himself. Oh, and Kelvin.

Come to think of it, shouldn't Desmond be dead already... I mean really, if Jimmy Lannon's Whack didn't kill, shouldn't getting caught in a volcanic eruption of 1960's bunker do the trick.

And really, what the heck is with his future visions, unless he's having more than just Charlie's and the show hasn't alluded to it yet, but that seems unlikely. Why hasn't he had a premonition of the freighters if they aren't who they say they are.

I like Desmond and all, but I think for things to change, he has to go.

Yes I really like him and stuff but you are (Sadly) correct. I -- (Thinks for a moment) Treebeardl4life agrees with Cable Runner. Desmond has to read his little book and die. Thats how it happens. Weather its season 4, 5, or 6. Hes gonna die charlie, Hes gonna die.

I don't get it. Why should he die?
I mean, basically every one on the show has killed someone, and the fact that he survibed the hatch explosion shows his importance, doesn't it?
If the producers really would want to get rid of him, they should just let him be saved and be with Penny.

It's not so much that he has to die, but that it just would be fun to watch. Timing is crucial, though. He needs get depressed and exasperated, and then read the book. As soon as he closes the back cover he hears a noise, looks up, and sees his Penelope coming toward him. Then......wham!!! a meteorite lands on him.

Or maybe he should drown in front of Penny and write on his hand: "Penny's Boat"

that cracked me up.

another good twist would be that if he killed Penny some way by mistake and sat there holding her and crying. then sees the book sitting there and reads it.

whew! I've read the book "Our Mutual Friend" - reading that book might do Desmond in (I usually like Mr. Dicken's work, but that book was a "killer"). Seriously though, Desmond is searching for something noble to accomplish, something to do to get his honour back. He witnessed Charlie's self-sacrificing moment in the Looking Glass station; he might do the same on the freighter... (to quote Mr. Spock - please hold your fingers in a "v") The Good Of The Many Outweight The Good Of The One Or The Few.
