Is the "Oceanic 6" really only 6?

I heard someone's take on the "Oceanic 6" the other day where she said that the "6" only refers to the 6 responsible for rescuing the others from the island. I hadn't even thought of this until I read that but it would sort of explain some things from episode 4.01. It sort of shows why people like Jack and Hurley had become celebrities once back in California. Why would Hurley yell out to the police that he was one of the Oceanic 6 unless that meant he was special in some way (like a hero who rescued a ton of people)? Or why do people ask Jack for an autograph? I don't think there is much here to this theory or that it solves any of the big mysteries but it's an idea I hadn't thought of before.

This is a great question, that all lost fans have to wait in suspense to find the answer.

I think 6 are "rescued" but more than 6 leave the island. I'm guessing at least Ben will leave via other means, otherwise how would he explain why he was on the island but wasn't on the plane? He could assume the identity of a dead passenger, but I'm betting he is not one of the "Six."

What is the source of that spoiler?

A poll of random Lost fans isn't a spoiler. A spoiler has some serious credibility behind it. Have a lot of the things you've called spoilers in your previous posts been like this?

Dark UFO isn't random. His source gave him a list of people who it might be. So one of those people (or more then one) get off the island.

Dark UFO might be reliable, but the results of a fan opinion poll isn't reliable. It's just everyone's best guess. Maybe it's right, maybe it's not, but I wouldn't bet my house on it.

But the Oceanic Six only refer to survivors of the plane crash.
Desmond, Juliet and other pre-island inhabitants could get off the island too, but since they weren't on the crash they aren't considered some of the six.
