Bernard Nadler

Bernard Nadler is a tail section survivor of the crash of Oceanic Flight 815 and the husband of Rose. He is the only tail section survivor that has not been killed, captured, or assimilated in to the Others. He wasn't seated in the tail section, and was only there when the plane crashed because he was using the bathroom then. Bernard cares very much for Rose and feels a need to fix things, like her cancer, not dissimilar to Jack.

Default Late Night Ecko Background Theory

Mr. Ecko is the tailles John Locke. By that I mean, Ecko was an ordinary man with an ordinary job. Much like John Locke. Ecko came off the plane is a suit I believe, this would explain why he wasn't in his priest attire on the plane (that is if he was a priest). Before he got on the plane, something happened between Ecko and his wife which made him want to serve and search for the Lord. The island gave him the courage and the power to fullfill his "destiny", much like John Locke. And also like John Locke, Ecko beleives this is his opportunity to fullfill his destiny. 40 days of silence. Powerful, thought-proking sentences. The smirk/smile on his face when he states his name to Sawyer (it was like he said it for the first time), and lead by example and emotion, not impule and violence.

Ecko, much like Locke in "walkabout", will stand up to the "Monster" due to faith. Ecko will use the Old Testament as his guide to salvation, much like how Locke used Destiny and other Buddist influences.

It could be very interesting. Ecko smashing the drugs because he is pissed off at his wife. It could become very deep if he smashes the Virgin Mary statue because he had given up his faith in his god and at the same time exposes Charley's H on the island. Then at the end he overcomes his inner demon flashback while reciting Psalm 23 incorrectly and at the same time he prgresses the storyline by defeating the island demon, or at least the small monster.

I don't think John Locke had a "Normal" job and history. We saw him at the packing company or whatever when he was crippled, and then working at Toy's R Us sort of store, but those jobs don't teach you the awesome skillz that he has. The man knows wood work, hunting, gathering, herbology, tracking, things about other stuff that normal people just don't know. I think his background story is going to be interesting. The only thing we've seen so far that helps us understand anything, is that he went hunting with his "father" a couple of times, but that doesn't turn you into a soldier of fortune.

I think Ecko will be an interesting character, but I think as they are friends now, Locke and Ecko will be enemies in the future, and one may have to kill the other.

Kyle

Eh? Why would you think that?

The whole black and white theme of Lost is probably a good reason for this theory.

I thought Locke and Eko would have a religious difference and start a mini-holy war between the two of them. White Trash, you got me thinking about thier confrontation again.

The only thing keeping me thinking the other way is the writer's clue about "Enkidu's Friend" - Gilgamesh. They were strangers, they met, they went into the forest and did thier business as partners and made a raft and floated away. (jist of Gilgamesh & Enkindu's story) The crossword's scene placement was timed to indicate Locke & Eko.

For those who believe the meanings of the the survivors names are very important to their roles - Eko comes from the Chinese equivalent (hui-hsiang) of the Sanskrit word parinamana. The e (hui) means "to revolve" and the ko (hsiang) means "direction". Therefore eko literally means "to change direction". Eko signifies that the reward of one's merits is directed toward the purpose of one's own salvation or toward others in order to help them. Merit dedication has had many different interpretations throughout Buddhist history. In the early stages of Buddhism, it referred to a master's dedication of his teachings (and so his merits or learning) to his disciples. In later Mahayana Buddhism, this inclusion of others in one's merits was broadened to include others with no direct relation to oneself. The influence of merit dedication upon the nature of one's own merit is to make it transcend any purely personal relation and so become a universal kind of merit.
