Benjamin "Ben" Linus
Benjamin "Ben" Linus is the leader of the Others on the Island. Ben arrived on the Island as a child, brought by his father Roger to work for the DHARMA Initiative. Ben takes orders from Jacob, and is the only person who visits and speaks with him. Ben's apparent goal is to keep the Island and its special properties secret from the outside world, and he goes to great lengths to achieve this.

Possibly the horrible events that occured to Jack after leaving the island (deaths from the "sickness" that Rousseau spoke of?, or just the realization that they were not meant to leave and that the future wa negatively affected by their leaving) and the eventual revelation by the Others of their REAL PURPOSE on the island (to ensure that God's plan is followed???) and of the history and supernatural aspects of the island made him a believer? Ben keeps calling his group "the good guys." Maybe they really are and they have to go to drastic lenghts to protect something very important. Who knows?

Does anyone else think this is strange coming from the "man of science"???

I will be very surprised if we ever look back and say, "Boy, I bet Jack wishes he would have trusted and listened to Ben."
Ben killed his father and all the people he knew. If Jack is, or becomes, a man of Faith it will be a process. I do not think you are born one way or the other. As some people think; that if you are smart, you are a person of science, or if you have Faith you have no place for logic or reason.
Most of the great men of Science and Faith have been beleivers in God. Rene Descartes, who said, "I think, therefore I Am." Was one of the smartest men ever and a great man of Faith.
I think that to say that men of Faith cannot be men of science is a unfair and forced seperation.

He also said to Kate at the end, that every bump on his flights he felt, he 'prayed' the plane would crash.

I am wondering if Jack is living some "double timeline" thing like Roland did after Jake died in the Stephen King Dark Tower Series' first book, or some weird time lag in "The Langoliers"? And that is the reason why his father could be both dead and alive at the same time, and also why Jack appears to be going crazy.

Jack is who he is....whether he be a man of science or a man of faith has no importance. What is important though is at the end of the day or at the end of your road so to speak all of us will be people of faith. It just is....at the end we always turn to God for answers, for reasoning for everything and so i dont think it was in any way strange of him to look up and say "Please forgive me" It's just a natural human thing we all end up doing regardless what we believe in.
I think Jack's character is very complex but all in all he is a Good Man/Hero whatever you may want to call him. He may at times come off as having a superiority complex but that is only because his father always made him feel less than what he was and so in turn he always had to prove something to him and maybe to himself. His character is very passionate and compelling. I love to watch him act. I enjoy all the characters but Jack just brings something special to the show and i enjoy that.
:grin
I think they will all find faith in their own ways at the end. Each one being their own and unique in that.
