Hi,
I think that this is the future Jack, and I think that he was somehow headed to have alcohol problems. (He told Julia in one episode that his dad taught him to drink. Also, in the pilot, he complains that his drinks are too weak.) Yep, Jack likes to drink. The drug problems developed, too. Why, we don't know for sure. I know that Jack knows that he should have never left the island and desperately wants to return at any cost. He is sick of all the lying.??? But, I do think the future was real there.

I don't know if it's been discussed yet but here's my take on it. Desmond's key turning adventure that sent him back to the past was to give us a clue as to what it means to "leave the island". When Jack left the Island he went back to some point in his life (probably shortly after his divorce), with flashes of the future (Like Desmond). He "remembered" Kate and the rest but didn't know them yet (Think Desmond talking to Charley on the street). He realized that he needs to be on the Island and never should have left but unlike Desmond who only had to get himself back to the situation that brought him to the Island, Jack has to get all the passengers of the Oceanic flight back on the plane if he has hope of returning to the Island. So when one of them dies he gives up hope and tries to kill himself thinking that it was now impossible to make it back (in the future) to the Island he never should have left.

But then again their is that "Golden Ticket" think that he gets to fly all over with, so that tends to put it post Island rescue. Perhaps his dad was rescued as well from the Island (We saw him in Season 1). Perhaps he was only mostly dead and took the Miracle Max pill and hid in a cave till the rescue.

Nice Aarastas, I've bought up this very idea before (look at the theory 'A brief history of the Crimson King'). i'm thinking now of a different Jack altogether, as in timelines, but a version of you going back is plausible as well, It really has to be one or the other if you take Desmonds 'Flashes before your Eyes' as a key to the show.
