Don't know for sure, but here is my theory.....

Michael was the first to get back from the island. (Or so we are led to believe)
Maybe when he and Jack were reunited, Jack may have realized that they should not have left the island. It seems like Jack will do anything to get back. When he read in the paper that Michael died, he realized that Michael was free from whatever it is that is so bad when they got back.
That is why he attempts suicide. He mentions that he was not friends or family with the person and that is what leads me to think it is Michael.

Did anyone notice that in Jack's flash forward he referred to his father??

When confronted in the hospital after stealling more drugs he says " get my father down here and if I am more drunk than he is then....."

But Jack's father died in Australia and that is why he was on the plane to start with.

So what the hell is all that about?????

Don't we think it is also strange that Jack (who did "turn" for lack of a better term on his dad who was drunk while operating... Then turns basically into his dad in the future..

I thought it was ironic that Jack hated how his dad was then after leaving the island he turns out to be just like him...

despression + pills + booze = deranged, incoherant ramblings. that's what him referring to his father was all about. it was a device used by the producers to keep viewers off the scent that this was actually a flash forward, i'm sure.

First time poster with a few toughts.

*The person in the coffin is NOT Juliete and we can also rule out any female and Walt. Why? Because I was able to read part of the newspaper headline and what I could read was MAN found in downtown Los Angeles. I might try to see more later but the only thing I could see in the body of the paper clip was the body was found after 4 p.m. which probably does not mean anything. As for who is in the coffin I just don't know but as some of you have alluded it is someone whose death would effect Jack and someone whose funeral Jack would think Kate would attend. It would also have to be someone no one likes. I don't know if the fact the funeral parlor was in a "black" part of town and the funeral director was black man lends any credence to it being Michael but at this time I can't see why Michael's death would cause such an emotional reaction from Jack but than again this is a flash forward so we don't know what Michael might end up doing.

Other random toughts:

*I don't know how, but I think Jack's dad is alive. It makes no sense but a lot of things on the show don't either and I think they will find a way to tie it in. If the Island can heal Locke maybe it brought Jack's dad back to live. Yes, it's a crazy tought but who knows.

*Someone was wondering if the lady in car crash was of any significance? I doubt it but I do know she was described as a 40 year old women.

*I believe the funeral parlor name, Hoffs/drawler, is an anagram. Some possibilities are "forward flesh" and if you leave an H out you can get "forward self". I know, I know, I'm reaching here.

*About Kate. I like the theory proposed about someone blackmailing her because she still would be a fugitive but I'm also inclinced to think she's had Sawyers child. Not much to go on but she might be pregnant, she drove a Volvo, had an appearance of someone whose life is in order and unlike Jack she did not seem to share the sentiment that they never should have left the island.

i've fleshed out my 'penny's father' theory a bit more. my prediction is that her dad has assumed control (or maybe he always had it) of dharma, who have come back to the island to mete out vengence upon ben and co. for massacaring the original dharma island people. it would make sense...he's incredibly wealthy, so he could fund something like that presumably. and it could also explain why naomi had a picture of desmond and penny on her when she landed.

i also think that in the end, ben will end up being a good guy, who was trying to protect the island from invaders who want to exploit the island's mystical/supernatural aspects. yes, he is misguided, yes he employs amoral means, but in the end, i think his intentions are good.

Interesting reading here. I'd like to run a theory by ya. Jack's suicidal tendencies in these flash-forwards may not be due to being upset by the loss of the person in the obituary. I.E. he may not have cared that much for this person whoever it might be, other than the fact that he DID die (and from the partial view you can see of the obituary on other sites - the death appears to _also_ be a suicide). My guess is that Jack is now drinking too much and taking strong pain relief pills for exactly that - relief from severe pain, and that it is the severe pain that is leading to his suicidal tendancies. The fact that another surviver - whether or not it was Michael or perhaps even one of the others - died or killed himself just made it hit him harder on what leaving the Island was doing to him and perhaps the rest of the survivers. It is possible that Ben was telling the truth, they cannot live away from the island for long, once exposed to it, without suffering severely and/or dieing - which is why he say's they must go back. It's true that Kate didn't look as bad off, but there could be explanations for that - she seems to have almost too much makeup on, perhaps to hide her own physical problems? She may be more strongly against going back because she somehow did have a child that survived because the birth was off the island or some other as yet unknown reason. Anyways, just some ideas. Read the first story in Dan Simmons Hyperion for the "pain when away from the source of immortatilty" idea...

FYI, the funeral parlor's name is "Hoffs/Drawlar" which gives us "flash forward" as the anagram - hope that helps!
