Well they die. But why? I think it's because of the gas that the hostiles and Ben used to purge the Dharma Initiative. It may have polluted the island's powers enough to make them destructive, rather than super-awesome. Thoughts?

Yea I posted somewhere else something along those lines. Yes they had gas masks on, but that does not mean they were completely free from the chemicals in the air that could have affected a number of things and caused many problems.

It's a good idea. I do believe that the islands location is a closed atmosphere, so a pollutant may take longer to weaken then here on earth world. I guess we have to find out if anyone ever was concieved and born on the island, they really have not alluded to that yet. Danielle may have been pregnant already.. or I'll guess we'll see what happens to Sun. I guess she's keeping Jin in the dark on the knew news huh?

Alex was skewering a white rabbit last night. (love a chick who eats raw meat with her hands... growl, but I digress). So we can assume that with all of the experiments run in the past, and that scene, that rabbits can procreate (and *blank* like rabbits) and we've seen little boar..kiddies? So the animals on the island can get pregnant and carry to term. Now I know what you're saying there House 'bunnies and boars ain't no humans' but that can probably eliminate the gas as the reason for the pregnancy problem, since I have seen absolutely NO animals wearing gas masks.
So what else is it? I figured it was the magnetic properties of tthe island at first, disrupting flow of ambiotic fluid, or abnormal growth rates, but wouldn't that affect the animals as well?
Lastly, i figured Jacob had a hand in this, but then why would Ben even attempt to thwart the grand Poobah's plans or actions..

Time loop... what.. arrghh, it's killing me.

Yep,if something affects humans you better believe it'll impact animals. Therefore this is something given to humans only--a virus that hits only women???

During the first season, Rouseau said that her team got sick (16 years earlier). Spray-painted on the inside of the Hatch was the word "Quarantine." Desmond, Kelvin, and all the rest of the Others seem to be injecting themselves with either a vaccine or antibiotic drug.

I think that sixteen years earler, there was some sort of a plague on the island, possibly a virus created by Dharma that affected only the human beings on the island (this was hinted at, I think, in the Lost Experience that ran during the second season). Dharma then came up with a vaccine (and maybe a "booster" shot you have to take every so many days) to protect the people on the island from the plague.

I think the pregnancy thing is an unintented side effect of taking the vaccine.
