I don't want to sound kinda out there but i heard the producers themselves say that every thing has a scientific reason for happening. So in this case MAYBE there's some technology here that we are not catching. Maybe it is fooling Ben too! I don't know where i'm going with this but i doubt theres a spirit or ghost on the island.

Yeah, but it can be technological as we all understand it, or goofy technology a la star trek. Just add a few scientific sounding syllables to stuff and you're there.

As stated in another thread, you can actually see Jacob for a brief instant.

It's approximately at 31:53, just after Locke shines the torch in the cottage and things go haywire. During the commotion, Ben is yelling at Jacob on the chair, when Ben is viciously thrown backwards against the wall. As the cameras quickly pans from Ben to Locke, it passes the chair and you see Jacob (a shadowy figure).

I never noticed it when I first watched the episode.

i think that smokey (black smoke monster) is a way that jacob gets things done on the island. when locke found the nigerian plane it was because of a dream that he had. i think that jacob sent locke this dream to lead him to a certain point on the island. and after he found the observation hatch with ecko and 'lost his way'. jacob through the smokey thing (which may just be an extension of himself because of the gray dirt surrounding his shack that could be keeping him from leaving his shack) tapped into ecko's thoughts and memories and sent him to help john through yemi. because when yemi appeared to ecko he said that the work being done on the island was very important and that he needed to help john. like i said before i believe jacob wants locke's help because ben has lost his way. the reason i believe that smokey or jacab killed ecko was because of his refusal to apologize for his past transgressions. because of this i believe that jacob or smokey found him unworthy of the task that he had given him of helping john. what do you think?

also i think the reason that ben is the leader is because he is the only one that can see or hear jacob. that's why he wants locke dead because he can't having him taking his place.

Jacob is Alvar Hanso. He disappeared and ended up in the degrotts crazy experiments, and POOF! he magically transformed into smoke. And absorbs people's memories and makes a sound wave that activates around the island.
