Looks like I was mistaken, only Mikhail joined the others through the newspaper ad, Kelvin just joined Dharma doesn't say how he was recruited or brought to the island..

Mikhail Bakunin
Bakunin grew up in Kiev and joined the Soviet Army, serving at some point as a soldier in Afghanistan and being familiar with field medical treatments. He also mentions being stationed at a military listening post in Vladivostok, as well as performing years of unpleasant actions in the service of the Soviet Union. In the early 1990s, his military unit was decommissioned and he was released from the Soviet Army. At the age of 24, he replied to a newspaper advertisement titled "Would you like to save the world?" and was recruited by a "magnificent man". He eventually ended up arriving on the Island around 1993. Before he was revealed as being one of the Others, he had claimed he was a member of the DHARMA Initiative but later confessed that this was not true. ("Enter 77")

Kelvin joined the DHARMA Initiative some time between 1991 and 2001. It is unknown how he came to the Island.
Unanswered questions for Kelvin:
How did he know Desmond crashed on the beach if he was pushing the button?
How was Kelvin actually transported to the Island?
Who brought Kelvin to the Island: the Others or Dharma?
Why did he lie to Desmond about the Island air being dangerous?
Did he kill Radzinsky?
He was left for dead on the rocks by Desmond, but did he actually die?
Where are his remains?
How did he survive the purge?

No Problem, I had forgotten how much we don't know about him and his story!

i think that the dharma initiative still exists but they are not in control of the island. as for kelvin he did say something about the hostiles to desmond once. so he knew they were there. i think he was the only dharma person on the island. that's why he all those guns in the hatch and the hatch was sealed so the hostiles couldn't get in.

Kelvin seemed to be in an Intelligence branch of the military, when he was serving. Mikhail was in Intelligence Gathering for the Soviet Army for a time. Does anyone wonder if these two were working TOGETHER?

There are quite a few guys who served in the military on this show:

*Mikhail

I believe Kelvin was not an Other for one simple reason. He wanted to escape the island on a sailboat. If he were truly an Other he would know this isn't possible.

But maybe he is/was an other and wanted to get away from them too.
And since Desmond made it to the island he thought he could get away.
I don't think Kelvin had anything to do with Ben and his gang but I still think it is possible. Just not likely.

I guess I could go either way with Kelvin, but, why would he stay in the hatch if he were an Other. I mean, he could have been the poor sap who was on button duty the day Des showed up, having been warned by Mikhail, and had to take one for the team and stay with the new guy until he felt he was trustworthy enough to leave alone. The Radzinsky killing himself thing is a mystery, but blood on the cieling probably only means 2 things, guy stinks gun in roof of mouth, or radzinsky tackles and is on top of Kelvin and Kelvin shoots upwards.
However, I still think Kelvin was Dharma.

Kelvin's motive for lying to Des about the island being contaminated was obviously to keep Des inside the hatch. Why? Because he was repairing the sailboat and didn't want Desmond to know. He believed pushing the button was necessary and couldn't just leave the station unmanned. Therefore he couldn't take Des with him.
