Desmond was a coward, plain and simple. He probably would have chickened out of marrying Penny one way or another. I mean, think about it, he just HAPPENS to have a religious experience the night before he was supposed to marry his first fiancee, Ruth??? No, that's not suspicious at all!! In addition, one really important reason why he kept pushing the button for so long is because unlike Eko, who was motivated by faith, Desmond is motivated by fear.

I agree there is way more to the libby story, the weird thing is she was in a few charachters flashbacks but she never had her own. Now that she is dead her story will have to be in a flashback connected to somone alive. Maybe Desmond AND Hurley!
