So this is a total stab in the dark theory but I think the Foundation and the Others are part of some expierment to raise super children.
Take Jack, he was a young and gifted surgeon. Locke has a billizion and one expertise. Walt can make things appear. Danielle's daughter was kidnapped but never harmed. Them trying to take Claire's baby after the psychic warned her that is was very, very important that she raised the child.
I mean, we already know that Hanso corporation was up to all kinds of crazy things. And the Dharma Initative was the same. Maybe everyone ending up on the island was a plot so study them as subjects.

Yeah, I had the thought of Uber children before - somewhere where we were talking about the 4-toed statue, and how (jokingly) you get superior brain power but at the cost of only having 4 toes. But - seriously - there does seem to be a lot of elements on the island that would suggest this, or something like it.
