James Ford, better known by the alias of "Sawyer", is one of the middle section survivors of Oceanic Flight 815. Sawyer's early life was ravaged by the con man who ultimately claimed both his parent's lives through conning them, instantly orphaning him. As a child, he wrote a letter to this con man, hoping to deliver it to him in person one day. Sawyer set out to search for him, presumably after he left school, however he, himself, ultimately became a con man and became the man he was hunting, became Sawyer. Revenge plays a big part in Sawyer's life, starting with the real Sawyer. On the island, Sawyer has often used his abilities to con people to get his wishes, and keeps a stash of useful items with him. However, after the death of the real Sawyer, he has begun to rethink his ways and is slowly turning into a leader for the survivors.
He escaped from the captivity of the Others with Kate, and has formed a relationship with her.

Mikhail Bakunin
. Not being one who likes being left in the dust on LOST theories, I of course Google'd the name. What do you know? Another historical reference.

you. Always. I love you, Pen
DESMOND: I love you, Penny. I've always loved you. I'm so sorry. I love you!
PENNY: I love you too.
DESMOND: I don't know where I am, but--
PENNY: I'll find you, Des--
DESMOND: --I promise--
PENNY: --no matter what--
DESMOND: --I'll come back to you--
PENNY: --I won't give up-- BOTH: I promise. I love you.
Also worth noting is that Rousseau appears in the episode (hopefully we learn more about her) and Francois Chau is credited as Dr. Marvin Candle - so either he appears in the flesh for once or they are going to get a chance to view yet another Orientation video.
Marvin Candle, Mark Wickman, who will he be next?
Matthew Waxtastic is my guess.

right on. do you think this guy is suppose to be the actual Mikhail Bakunin of the 1800s. that means he would be going on his 200th bday pretty soon (fyi wednighter). I wonder if any other losties are from the 17 and 18th century.for example. ben could be nixon and tom could be hitler. or vice versa
That would make for a very interesting twist, but I actually believe that the references to philosophers, anarchists, Wizard of OZ characters etc. is just "coincidence" but may provide a hint about the character.
Locke is not very much related to the philosopher except in name and perhaps in some of his ideology, but he certainly doesn't appear to have come from the 1700's, nor does Desmond David Hume seem to share much in common with David Hume of the 1800's.
