Dr. Jack Shephard
Dr. Jack Shephard is often seen as the main character of the series. He is a spinal surgeon and the de facto leader of the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815. Jack has control issues and trouble dealing with situations that he cannot fix. However, this attitude of solving problems through reason has given him the ability to function well in crisis. Sometimes, if he feels guilt or pain over a situation he can't fix himself, he will do anything he can to fix it, even borderlining on obsessive. Jack is, most of the time, in control of his life, emotions and situation he is in and is able to keep a cool head in tense situations. Jack is also the half brother of Claire Littleton, although neither of them is aware of this. Jack has formed very strong bonds with Kate and Juliet while he has been on the Island.

A Brief History of the Crimson King
It's not a perfect theory, but I have an idea that the Lost island is at some sort of Event Horizon.
Desmond follows a life course, which has choices and consequences, and during that course, he crashes on an island, after a violent storm deposits him there. He struggles there, with a teacher of a certain path, and then alone doing what he was taught. A new event, invloving new people who have made choices to get them to that very point, but reaching that point from very different starting points, have intersected wiith that path. Some found there way to that Singular place, even though sometimes they struggled against what factors were involved in there life, others followed their course dutifully.
This singular place is time stopped, a rip in the three dimensions, which can be accessed at various points along the time line of the universe which expanded violently and exponentioally, always connected at the beginning.(this is a bit of a theme in the Brief history of Time) There is no death in this place, since it does not exist along moving time, the end is a travel backwards, to the point in your life where a choice was made to bring you to tis very sinular place.
Aldo (short for Aldous) was reading this very chapter in A Brief History of Time, making a drawing of a Black Hole's singularity? not sure.
Desmond was influenced by the od lady, I'm not certain what she was, but she was not BENevolent. She turned him back on the course of the island, saying it was course correction. But there would have been correction in some other fashion, another person would have come to the event horizon, to push the button, to keep the horizon inhabited just enough to keep it Relevant.
Desmond did not marry Penny, went along the same path and do it all over, he got hit on the head, the rest is history, he was launched back to the spot on the island from which he disappeared. His old self was destroyed, gone, his new self replaced the old, with n history, hence, nakedness.
Boone is not dead, which is why hi s hair was longer in Locke's vision, he is back at the choice where he went to the island, helping Shannon. possibly, he didn't fall for her trick, and took another course.
Eko is a boy again, and perhaps will let his brother be taken.
Jack's father tried to lead him off a cliff to his end, and back to his choice.
Dave tried to lead Hurley there, who shouldn't have been there at all. The island has tried to take Charlie THREE times, but the people on the island need him somehow, he will not die soon now that he knows.
If you had many choices to lead you this point, then you il ave many flashbacks to those, events, and hopefully learn the next time you encounter it. Desmond failed miserably.
The only question is... when will Roland show up for his final confrontation with the Crimson King.(If you know this you are a huge Stephen King fan like myself, as are Abrhams, Cuse and Lindelhoff)

I really don't know any Stephen King, but a Stephen King theory would make complete sense since all of it's references in the show. From what you've written it is a logical theory that does seem to have merit(even without any knowledge of S.K.) Do you think that the Ring Lady is the Island Herself. I always found Locke's "I've looked into the EYE of the island..." a bit odd, usually it's the HEART that's examined. She stopped time?, She made the course correction?, She controls events? She is the Singular Point? I like your idea. I want to think on it a bit more and then comment some more because it is a BIG idea! Good one, though!

Thanks Queen. I was afraid I was going to get booted from the forum for my inane ramblings, but rereading it, I really believe it.
I'm not so sure what the old lady is as I said, yes, she could be the island... or, if you noticed, there was a grey haired gentleman leaving the store as Desmond was looking. Perhaps these people (all of US will die) are in cahoots, knowing already who should be there, and he came to the lady's store to warn her about Desmond. I don't know.
In the Dark Tower Series, by SK, there is a group of people who exist in all times and all places, because they alone control the doorways. They help the main character along his path, but, are they really 'helping' him, or helping themselves, or all of humanity.
Thomas Mittlework believes he is helping humanity, at the cost of a few.

Is Thomas Mittlework a character from the S.K. Book? Or is he from the Mittlelos? corp in Lost? The Dark Tower series has a similar sound to The Matrix with the doorways (and keys), Morpheus and Trinity helping Neo find his path (which would help all of humanity at the cost of a few {Spock's the good of the many outweigh the good of the one or the few}) and there is a kind of no death with the Architect talking about catastrophic endings and new versions of the matrix... Your theory is extremely interesting I told you I want to consider it because it's thought provoking.

Run it by him, I'm interested to see what other's have to say. Mittlework, I read, was the guy who took over Dharma in the Lost Experience ARG over last summer. I didn't do it myself, just rtead about it online.
The Dark Tower series started in 1973, so the matrix no doubt borrowed ideas from the King himself.
It is wacky, but like I said in another thread, Ben said in season 2... "God doesn't know we're here!" That line always bothered me. Where would God not know about. It could have just been a line from a pompous person, or it could be said from a guy who has lived an odd life, with no repurcussion, and no one to really answer to.

No, that's it EXACTLY. Eko's decision was when he was a boy, but Charlie say, it could have been mere hours. He may have decided to ask his brother to do the band again, or ask his brother for help getting clean, and at the last second decided not to.
Kate may have blown up Wayne, but then decided not to run. or not run as long, not to Austraila. I believe that is what the flashbacks are showing, decisions, now we have to decide which one is the one they go back to, if they do at all.
Sawyer, yes, is hard to pin. We'll see more of him, but it seems like he has to just let go of his anger. not become a conman, maybe an underwear model. (I'm not gay, that's what Josh Holloway did for a while)
I believe Locke will never leave. Why would he, his life seemed so scattered before, and this is what he always wanted to do. He'll prob marry Rouseau.

Actually I think Bernard would choose exactly the same. They are retired, it's like Florida, it's warm, they are both old, only, no Red Lobster, just brown ones, and you have to get them yourself. And, Rose lives.

Yes I agree with you was just seeing how many people I could get to fit into the theory.... The more people that it would work with the theory, The more possible it seems
