Dr. Jack Shephard

Dr. Jack Shephard is often seen as the main character of the series. He is a spinal surgeon and the de facto leader of the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815. Jack has control issues and trouble dealing with situations that he cannot fix. However, this attitude of solving problems through reason has given him the ability to function well in crisis. Sometimes, if he feels guilt or pain over a situation he can't fix himself, he will do anything he can to fix it, even borderlining on obsessive. Jack is, most of the time, in control of his life, emotions and situation he is in and is able to keep a cool head in tense situations. Jack is also the half brother of Claire Littleton, although neither of them is aware of this. Jack has formed very strong bonds with Kate and Juliet while he has been on the Island.

Default How Jack was supposed to die in the pilot

Charlie: waht's that about?

Kate senses it before she sees it. Slowly tilts her head up as we follow her gaze skyward --

And she GASPS.

We are looking up the trunk of an enormous tree. Gnarled and battle-scarred with centuries of living, the thing's gotta be sixty feet tall....

And thirty feet up, something is WEDGED in the branches. at first, it doesn't seem to make sense -- maybe it's a pair of pants someone hung up there to dry...

But that's not what it is.

It's JACK.

The position of his limbs horrible, unnatural.

He's dead.

End of ACT TWO.

isn't that how the pilot died?

Yes I did hear that was supposed to be Jack. I didnt think he was supposed to die in the first episode though, because I remember hearing the reason why he wasnt killed of because everyone was making a huge deal out of him being a great main charecter after the first episode.

So from what I understand, it was after the first episode was aired that they decided to keep him on the show

I believe Michael Keaton was signed on to be Jack for the two part pilot episode. Execs high up at Touchstone Pictures decided Jack was the hero and leader of the show and shouldn't be killed off. One of Touchstone Producers said he liked the character to much. Keaton backed out, he stated he did not want to do a long term television series. Mathew Fox came in to replace Keaton. Jack was supposed to be the one found in the tree and Kate was going to be the leader of the group.

I kind of liked the pilot for the whole 5 minutes he was actually in the episode. But I think I am glad that Jack is alive instead. Really makes you wonder what the "monster" is that did that to him.

Poor Keaton...they were going to cast him for a one-episode role. How low must you get to achieve that status?

I'm glad they let Jack live and Fox does an excellent job in the role!
