Kate Austen
Kate Austen is one of the middle section survivors of Oceanic Flight 815. Kate is a fugitive, and was being pursued by Marshal Mars prior to the flight, for blowing up her father. Kate had been captured in Australia and was being escorted back to the United States before the crash. Kate has always seemed to run away from her past. Even on the Island, Kate exhibits a kind of evasive behavior to escape from her problems. Kate, when on the run, always had good intentions and never did any outright harm or killings to anybody, she believed she was doing things for the greater benefit of others. This view is prominently connected with her actions of her father's murder - she believed she was relieving her mother from his abusive presence. Kate is strong-willed, useful and clever, but dislikes being alone and is usually level-headed.
She has escaped from the captivity of the Others with Sawyer, and has formed an ambiguous romantic relationship with him, despite still being unsure about her feelings for Jack.

It's Official!!!!!!!!!!!
It is official, dharma did cause the plane crash which means that there is an intentional reason for the survivors to be on the island. Why do I say this? Did anyone notice the baby toy hanging from alex's would be crib? They were 727's, another obvious yet subtle clue from the writers, that was enough for me. There were so many revelations in last night episode! Bear with me, I'm about to start rambling. First, I thought that the guy that ethan had to talk to out side the room had a distinctly familiar voice, but the face didn't match up until they show the fake beard and stage glue in the locker with the ragged clothes. It was bluebeard!!! Duh. That leads me to believe that the whole primative look of the others is a sham and that they are civilized intelligent members of dharma. This also solidifies my last theory about henry gale, he has been in a cave for a month but is still clean shaven and well groomed? How? He is one of the others, because under the grimy disguises all of them are well groomed. My question now is what is the deal with dharma and the kids? They were gonna cut her baby right out of here stomach! A bit desperate to me. Another thing why do the others want to appear so primative! The rags and fake beards seem like a lot of effort to maintain a disguise. Another thing, remember when clean-shaven blue beard told ethan that he was supposed to make the list first before he brought the girl? That also lets me know that they perhaps expected or even caused the crash. That episode was pretty deep if you paid attention. Thanx for your patience, I await your replies.

I just lifted these two sentences from your post...
And these are just my 2 cents worth.... Claire was REALLY drugged up at the time so her memories might be a little skewed... Perhaps the writers threw us a red herring with the little airplanes. The mobile played "Catche a Falling Star" which was what Claire had asked the adoptive parents to sing to the baby when she spoke to them on the phone. I got the feeling that was just her wishing that was the song she heard on the mobile... Again... she was drugged up pretty good.
Cutting the baby out... The doctors cut my second child out of me and I'm ok. It's a C-section. If that gal was Alex and had lived with the Others all 16 years and wasn't exposed to the outside world -- she wouldn't know what a c-section was, so it would seem a little barbarian without much explaination.
Again, just my 2¢!

Why is it not possible that they took her off the Island?

I am pretty well firmly in the side of the crash-was-staged camp...except I've thought about the conversation between Zeke and Ethan, and something that was said put a big wrinkle in that theory...
Ethan told Zeke that he grabbed Claire earlier than planned because 'they had the manifest, and were about to figure me out'...or something like that.
Well...why would a brilliantly thought-out plan that actually recreated a plane crash leave behind a flight manifest????

The thng is, they themselves are starting to turn into slight savages...
ALSO, wouldn't you think that on an island where supposedly nobody else is, (except for maybe the Others, who they havn't made the connection between them and the Dharmans) wouldn't you think that they are a bit scared of perfectly clean-shaven, showed, perfumed, shiny people living on a deserted island? I think that would scare me a bit.
