That is why the plane crashes in the daytime, not at night as it would have if what the pilot said was correct:
(departure in afternoon from Sydney, fly 6 hours toward L.A., then turn around and fly 2 hours back toward Fiji).

Here is an elaboration of this theory with more evidence and conjecture:
One thing that is a mystery to me in the pilot is that the crash occured in broad daylight. You see daylight out the windows of the plane leading up to the crash and behind the plane when the tail breaks away, and when the survivors are first shown on the island after the crash.
The plane left Sydney no earlier than 11:15am (Sun's scheduled time to abandon Jin). I have heard that the plane left at 2:55pm, but have not been able to confirm this.
Additional Info: The screen capture from Exodus pt. 2 here shows the scheduled departure time of flight 815 was 14:15 Sydney time (2:15pm). That makes perfect sense with Jin and Sun checking in sometime after 11:15am.

The pilot of the plane said they were travelling for 6 hours from Sydney to L.A., then the radio went out, then they turned back toward Fiji and flew another 2 hours before hitting turbulence. That would put the crash sometime in the middle of the night. When they found the cockpit of the plane in Pilot pt. 2, it was again daytime and they said it had been 16 hours since the crash. That means the crash happened in the afternoon sometime of the previous day, not the middle of the night.
So, it is possible this is just a "continuity error," but I think this is unlikely. If it is a clue, then it means the plane was travelling in a different direction and/or for a different amount of time prior to the crash.
My *guess* is that the passengers of the plane were drugged (either by something put in the air supply, or by drinks handed out) , and that it was flown by someone West toward the East coast of Africa. But this is only a guess based on references to the Beechcraft with the drug smugglers from Nigeria, etc. I think when they were in the "Black Rock" getting dynamite, that Locke mentioned slavers from the east coast of Africa. I don't know if it was a clue to some "lost time", but Charlie was badly in need of a drug fix on the plane (would that be normal if he had just done drugs before leaving the hotel?)
There may be clues about Hanso and Dharma on various websites (I think there was a reference to research being done on Madagascar in an online PDF letter), but I try to stick to the contents of the show itself for hard evidence.
If the "they were drugged" theory is correct, they could be just about anywhere with a tropical climate. The plane could even have landed and taken off again. The pilot of the plane may have been drugged as well, so he thinks he is telling the truth. We certainly have seen evidence of amnesia (Charlie and Claire) and of drugging by the "Others" in season 2.
