Mr. Eko
Eko, also known as Mr. Eko or Father Tunde, was one of the tail section survivors of Oceanic Flight 815. He was a notorious war lord and drug smuggler in Nigeria before his brother Yemi's death. To get out of his country he hastily became a priest, but after Yemi's death, he seemed to take his role more seriously. Eko survived on the Island for 72 days before he was killed by the Monster.

I think IF Jacob was ever off the island it was a long long time ago before electricity, and all the technology that he doesn't like.. I still think he is a native from the island or something to that effect though..

Well I'm new at this, I just saw the 4 seasons in like the last month. So I might just be babbling here, but here it goes.
I think Richard should be the focus, but will we get what we want? that's another story. I do think Richard is more important than the writers are letting show, I see him a little more as part of a copy, not necesary exact, of the Holy Trinity. We know the Holy Ghost play a very big part, but it might sound to a lot of people as the one that runs the errants for God. So my point here in the comparison between the Holy Trinity and the Island leadership is actually Jacob being the "god", Richard the "holy ghost" and Ben or whoever takes his place (if is that what Jacob's looking for) the "jesus" part. Maybe could be looked as the owner (Jacob), administrator (Ben/Locke) and assistant maybe even negotiator (Richard). I guess if the administrator is not doing the job it should be replaced, now Richard I think is exactly where Jacob wants and needs him.

I voted for other because I think that Jeremy Bentham (obviously A.K.A John Locke) will probably play a big part because we need a few questions answered about a few things;
1.) What "bad" things happened to the Island and the people on the Island AFTER Jack and them left it? Because apparently John Locke had come to every one of the Oceanic 6, (as well as Walt), and told them that they need to go back to the Island. He even specified further and explained to Jack that the horrible things that had happened on the Island after Jack left were Jacks fault. I would love to know what these things were, that were SO bad that just HEARING what had happened drove Jack to leaving Kate and Aaron and becoming a drugged out, suicidial person almost leaping off of bridges, and flying on planes trying to crash back to the Island. They must have been something really bad.
2.) "Anyways I do want know about Richard, but I think his backstory will very interesting but also anticlimatic because he seems to be not much more than just one of the gang."
One of you above said this and I have to disagree because, look at Richard. We've seen him in three or four SEPERATE TIME PERIODS and he is almost uncannily the exact same age. We see him when John Locke is born staring eerily through the window, we see him come and play a sort of "dali lama" trick asking a 5 year old version of John Locke which items belonged to him. We see him in the present day recruiting Juliet and we saw him talk to Ben when Ben was a young boy. There is something very interesting about Richard Alpert, he is obviously either a time traveler, or as stated above (and I like this theory) maybe he was on the Black Rock and has found the fountain of youth (which, to answer your question from above the fountain of youth is simply a fountain of water which, when drunk by a person grants eternal life). Richard is also the one who seemed as though he wanted Ben overthrown, he came to John Locke with the file on James "Sawyer" Ford, and allowed James to kill Lockes father so that Locke could look like the leader the others needed to overthrow Ben, which in the end leads to Locke going to see Jacob for the first time, and apparently you can only see or hear Jacob if you are worthy and when Locke heard Jacob say "Help Me.", Ben knew that it was time to try and take out Locke by shooting him and leaving him for dead in the mass grave of the Darma Initiative, because since Locke had heard Jacob, he was therefore a threat to overthrowing him. But in the end, at the end of season 4 when Ben and Locke are in the Orchid, Ben understands that what is in the best interest of the Island IS for John Locke to take over. Which is why Ben sacrifices himself to move the Island, and ends up in the Sahara desert, which I believe is in the future.
3.) If you notice in the last episode of season 4, when Ben goes down to move the Island, he cuts his right arm in his green Darma Initiative parka. And earlier in the season, when you see Ben appear in the Sahara desert, he is steaming from the cold changing to such a hot atmosphere, as well he also is wearing the same green parka and he still has the hole and cut on his right arm in the parka. I believe that the Black Rock has something to do with the Island moving or time travel, that wheel he was turning looked quite like an old ships wheel. Also, very shortly after Ben goes to that hotel and asks the lady at the desk what the DATE and YEAR are. He then goes to Iraq and meets up with Sayid and makes Sayid think it is his idea to help Ben kill all of the people on Bens list. Anyway, Ive ranted long enough and I could go on forever. Hope to see some intellectual comments back.

In response to Mr. Bentham (too long to add quote)
1. The "bad" thing I think happened is that the Losties turn on each other and split up just like the split between Jack and Locke. This leads to a mini war which spills onto Locke and the Others. To protect themselves, Locke has to kill some of the Losties. I believe Locke tells Jack that he is the reason for the split. Those who think he got off to rescue them and those who think he did not care about them.
2. My theory on the age process: Ageing ceases to occur only on the outside due to both science and some sort of unexplainable magic. The inside, however, ages but at a slower rate than a normal person while on the island. My reason for believing this is when we first met Juliet and she examined the young girl ( I think she was in her late 20's) and she had the womb of a 70 yr old woman. I also think that location also plays a major role in the ageing process. The closer you are to the source of the science/magic, the slower the ageing. This is why Ben's house is located on top of the smoke monster's chamber and the camp is there as opposed to the top of a hill. Absorb enough science/magic and ageing can cease (Richard, possibly Ben) but if you stay away long enough, ageing can begin again.. I am not sure if it will be accelerated continously until you die or just to catch up to where your body suppose to be.
As for Richard being just one of the gang... I don't think so. We know that he has been off the island before Ben was born, he is the leader in the absence of Ben (takes them to the Temple and leads the Others in the Jungle), is apparently doing something important because we never see him at the camp, and seems to be the only one able to question Ben's authority.
3. Most of your observations have been discussed on many other threads. What I have not heard (or dont remember someone saying) that the wheel is actually the ship's wheel. That would be very interesting. I think that will mean the final island moving chamber was built a lot later than what we thought. I smell some good theories coming from this.

Here is what I meant by saying Richard seems to be just one of the gang.
I am not saying that Richard isn't important, especially since we have seen him in some pretty interesting flashbacks, and his whole not seeming to age thing. What I am saying is that we might just find out that he is one of a group of people that go around and perform tasks like we have seen him do. So in this sense he is not really that special or one of a kind. In other words if he wasn't around another member of his group would have been assigned to carry out the tasks we have seen him do in flashbacks.
Again Richard is an important and interesting character. I just think he might not be unique. It may turn out that he is one of a kind, but I think we will see that he is part of a group of people all capable of doing everything we have seen him do and with the same apparent long life span.
Some possible people in this group could be:
Abbadon
Brother Campbell
Ms Hawking
maybe even Tom was one

I would like to see how Brother Campbell and Mrs. Hawking know eachother! I think your right about a side group of people that are "special" I think we put Richard in a class of his own right now because he is the only on as of now that we have seen unaged over a long period of time. We really don't know much about Abbadon, but he also has visited Locke before ever coming to the island so I think he and Richard and like equals on opposite sides but they were both working for the same purpose, getting Locke to the island, then again Richard gave up on him it seems after the science camp that Locke refused to go to and Abbadon didn't show up until late in his life so I guess I really don't know..
Sorry for the rant, not sure I got anywhere with this but it my scatter-brained thoughts coming out =P
