Kate Austen

Kate Austen is one of the middle section survivors of Oceanic Flight 815. Kate is a fugitive, and was being pursued by Marshal Mars prior to the flight, for blowing up her father. Kate had been captured in Australia and was being escorted back to the United States before the crash. Kate has always seemed to run away from her past. Even on the Island, Kate exhibits a kind of evasive behavior to escape from her problems. Kate, when on the run, always had good intentions and never did any outright harm or killings to anybody, she believed she was doing things for the greater benefit of others. This view is prominently connected with her actions of her father's murder - she believed she was relieving her mother from his abusive presence. Kate is strong-willed, useful and clever, but dislikes being alone and is usually level-headed.

She has escaped from the captivity of the Others with Sawyer, and has formed an ambiguous romantic relationship with him, despite still being unsure about her feelings for Jack.

Default Hurley gets better as Jack gets worse?

Maybe I have this timeline wrong. Let me know if so, please.

Hurley sees Charley in a bodega, crashes his Camaro in a police chase, and gets recommitted to Santa Rosa by AnaLucia's former partner, where he starts regularly chatting w/Charley on the front lawn. Charley tells him that someone is coming soon to see Jack. Hurley's doctor tells Jack that ttreatment isn't working anymore because Hurley doesn't believe that anyone there was real--except for Jack and Charley, apparently. (Does he think he's still on the island? Still in Jacob's cabin?) Hurley is near catatonic when he tells Jack that Charley told him someone is coming to visit Jack. Now, at some point, Hurley gets better, or at least he recovers enough that he's alert and coherent and responsive in the near future during a game of horse with Jack, during Jack's second visit. Hurley was even lucid enough that he already knows (before Jack does) that they have to go back to the island.

At the same time that Hurley gets better, however, Jack was gets worse and worse. Remember during horse, Jack already had a beard and was a little skittish! He was drinking during the day (drank while watching Hurley's police chase on TV).

What helps Hurley finally start to come out of his craziness?

I'm under the impression that the game of horse happened before he tells Jack that someone is coming to visit him. Hurley sees Charlie in the mini mart, car chase, goes to mental inst. Jack comes to visit him, plays bball, mentions that he was thinking about growing a beard. Then he ends up living with Kate and going to visit Hurley and being warned about his own visitor coming and that he "isn't supposed to raise him". Jack seemed completely normal at both visits. Normal as in not depressed and addicted to drugs.

I think that it will be Hurley's realization that the only way to make things "right" is to go back to the island. I always thought that the end scene for the series would be Jack and Kate at the airport with Jack begging Kate to go back, but now I believe they do go back and Jack and Kate end up as Adam and Eve...

I also believe the game of horse is sometime before the end of Kate's trial..

I posted this on this thread Timeline Question
Thought it also kinda applies here..

I thought through the writing they made it clear. Jack and Kate make a comment that she is glad he changed his mind after the trial. Hurley has been talking to Charlie for a bit of time now more than once. Hurley even said to Jack in this episode I thought you didn't want to be around them. Jack's response I changed my mind after the trial.

The biggest reason though is the fact we are getting to see Jack downward spiral to the Jack we saw in Though the Looking Glass. Jack asks Dr. Erica for a prescription, we see him drinking heavily at the end, Now Jack has also seen his father 2 times in this episode which could shed some light ask to why In the Looking Glass he made the comment to bring his father down and if he is more drunk that he is he will go home..

Really? But he's clean shaven at the trial and starting to grow a beard during that game of horse, isn't he? Hurley asks him why he hasn't shaved, and Jack says he's trying to grow a beard, to which Hurley replies, "You'd look weird with a beard, dude." Love Hurley.

Yea, but we know Jack has started drinking OJ and vodka at that time too.. But after the trial Jack and Kate are together when Jack goes to visite Hurley and he is much worse.. This leads me to believe that when Hurley and Jack played Horse it was just before the end of the trial or right after before he decided to live with Kate and Aaron. Kate does make the comment that she got Jack the new razor and he asks what ya don't like the stubble? So I am thinking that the game of horse was before that but maybe not that much before..
