The Lost Powers That Be have obviously said condradictory things. I'm sure it is to keep us guessing and it is in their best interests to be mysterious.

The producers said that the show will contain the same level of “sci-fi” elements as a Michael Crichton book. Note that he wrote a book called “Timeline” where people traveled back to the past via time machine. The time machine broke down a person into particles and accelerated the particles to a point where they could pass through a wormhole to the past. I’d say that “Timeline’s” level of “stretching science” is the equivalent to support this theory of time travel in LOST. Furthermore, Cuse and Lindelof also said made a side comment in an interview that the island could exist in “any time.”

I didn't hear anything like that from any of the podcasts. Science fiction has been an element of the show for a while now:
1. Daniel Faraday is a physicist studying Kerr metrics at Oxford University.
2. The Swan has a role in regulating electromagnetic radiation emanating from the island.
3. Being "unstuck" in time (like Desmond), which is actually a theory concerning the fourth dimension and our concept of time ( read here for more info).
4. Teleportation (as you mentioned).
5. There are also rumors floating around that the smoke monster itself is some type of technology rather than merely a "monster."
...and to those I say, "Good show." It's much easier to explain away unbelievable plot lines and occurrences by simply saying: it's magic! I think it's much more difficult and conseuqently more entertaining to add some plausibility to all the happenings on the island.
