Paulo

Paulo was one of the middle section survivors of Flight 815. Before the crash, he and Nikki Fernandez murdered Howard L. Zukerman and stole his diamonds. They spent most of their time on the island searching for these diamonds to the exclusion of almost everything else. A bite from a Medusa spider induced a death-like paralysis in Paulo. He subsequently died as a result of being buried alive while paralized.

Default The movie "The Island" and LOST...

I found something slightly similiar to "the Island" (2005) and LOST. "The Island" is about cloning and they discussed Eugenetics and Life Extension in the move. Heidi Fugeman Lindelof, wife to Damon Lindelof, was an Associate Producer to the movie. Alex Kurtzman and Robert (J.R.) Orci from JJ Abrams' Alias wrote the movie. I have a feeling when Damon and Heidi Lindelof have a Saturday night Hollywood cocktail party with their friends...the discussions get DEEEEEP!!

Yeah, real deep! Seeing as the movie The Island is basically a clone off the movie THX 1138, then mix in every movie you've ever seen about clones and you have The Island. Not a very original movie, I enjoyed it, but nothing special. But I imagine the conversations at their tables are unorginal just like everyone elses.

When I watched the movie all I could think about was Dharma. And yes the movie was very unoriginal but also entertaining.

Question Actually.....

The movie,"The Island", seems to be a remake, with a little bit of moderizing of the storyline, science behind the plot and character names, of Logans Run...down to the enforced removal from the population when a character reaches 30 or in the Island's case, harvest-ability.

Am I the only one who got that?

In the Island they weren't there for a certain amount of time to meet a harvestability standard, they were there until they were needed by the person that had purchased a clone. They weren't supposed to be alive, they were supposed to be comatose vegatables, but the lead guy had a god complex. It had a more THX 1138 feel to it, but yeah, some elements from Logan's Run could have been thrown into the melting pot.

Uh, nope....In the Island, after they were cloned (that is "grew up" in their pretty little tanks of cloning goo, they ran around in their little designer spandex catsuits...until the "client" needed their goodies.....NOT comatose....they basically lived and were good little worker ants in the secret underground city...even going through a "buffet line" at mealtime...all this while waiting on a stupendous lottery-like event to give them something to strive for - JUST like Logans Run lottery....they were THEN put under and THEN, DUH DUH DUUUUH, their needed cloned parts were *harvested* for their specific people.

*smiles sweetly*

Honestly - Lost Team notwithstanding - I just wish Hollywood would start seeking out NEW ideas and talented writers for NEW stories and stop already with the patched-together from old done to DEATH themes/stories, focus-grouped-to-death pablum.
It would result in MUCH better cinema and employ and entirely NEW sort of writer.....one that has to stretch for art.
EXAMPLE: I, Robot
If they had used the original screenplay by Azimov and Ellison, it would have been brilliant........the distributed film, although full of great CGI, was predictable at best.

(If I have to see one more thinly veiled or overt remake, I'll scream.)

It also contained the over the top special effects where our hero and heroine can defy gravity, injury, and death in circumstances that would kill us mere mortals. I recently watched Torque and Fast and The Furious 2 and this seems to be the trend in sub par action films. The XXX series builds its plotlines based around these too. But getting back to The Island.... it also had a smattering of Westworld as well and the more recent Fortress with Christopher Lambert.

Someone once said there are no more more original ideas in Hollywood. Perhaps they have been right all along. Although, LOST seems to have broken its own mold. I just fear, however, that this will at some point start a trend of "people thrown together in extraordinary circumstances" clones for TV. Imagine a busload of people stranded in the desert and they happen upon a backdoor to Area 51? Or a group of tourists involved in a remote caving expedition find themselves trapped and stumble upon abandoned bunkers and storage facilities that were never put on their maps? Vacationers in a European style Alpine village are cut off from the world by deadly avalanches and upon exploring some of the resorts inner workings find a secret door to a mountain interior nonoe knew existed?

Hell, if I can think it up................... LOL.

OK, I am going back to my room now!!!

Calypso108, read what I said again, they were cloned, and were supposed to be comatose, but the guy running the show wanted to play god so he let them run around like scurrying little ants. And I'll say, Logan's Run is simular, And THX 1138 is simular. THX 1138 coming out a full 5 years before Logan's Run, so who's also copying off of who in this instance?

Here is the synopsis of Logan's Run....

It is 2274. Some type of holocaust has decimated the earth, and the survivors sealed themselves into a domed city near Washington, D.C. To maintain the population balance, the computers that run the city have decreed that all people must die at 30. This system is enforced by "sandmen" : black-clad police operatives who terminate (kill) "runners" (those who attempt to live beyond 30). Logan, a sandman, is sent on a mission to find "sanctuary," which is a code- word used by the master computer to describe what it believes is a place to which runners have been escaping. Logan begins to question the system he serves and after seeing for himself that there is life beyond the dome, he returns to destroy the computer.

Here is the synopsis for THX 1138

George Lucas adapted this, his first film, from a short he made at University. THX 1138, LUH 3417, and SEN 5241 attempt to escape from a futuristic society located beneath the surface of the Earth. The society has outlawed sex, with drugs used to control the people. THX 1138 stops taking the drugs, and gets LUH 3417 pregnant. They are both thrown in jail where they meet SEN 5241 and start to plan their escape.

Like I said, The Island is a melting pot of other movies.
