I guess Michael was frustrated and sad that he couldn't part in Walt's childhood. After Walt's mom (What's her name again?) death, Michael felt like he finally had the opportunity to getting to know his son. Quite normal he wanted to protect him.
BUT: this isn't an excuse for killing two people and delivering four of his friends to the others wheere he didn't know what they were going to do to them.
So I've been thinking about that and it came to my mind: What if Michael was angry with the other losties BECAUSE they didn't help him find Walt. So trading Kate, Jack and Sawyer would be kind of a revenge. Still wouldn't be an excuse to me, but who knows?

P.S. I've come up with an excuse for Ana-Lucia for not go looking for the kidnapped kids: the tail losties had had much more "contact" with the others, meaning they got attacked, taken etc. So, she might have been to scared to go and look for them.

albeit he could gain some secondary redemption IF and WHEN Walt returns as a HERO..

so no discussion of Mike can happen without discussing the role of Walt as uniter and divider..
