Dr. Jack Shephard

Dr. Jack Shephard is often seen as the main character of the series. He is a spinal surgeon and the de facto leader of the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815. Jack has control issues and trouble dealing with situations that he cannot fix. However, this attitude of solving problems through reason has given him the ability to function well in crisis. Sometimes, if he feels guilt or pain over a situation he can't fix himself, he will do anything he can to fix it, even borderlining on obsessive. Jack is, most of the time, in control of his life, emotions and situation he is in and is able to keep a cool head in tense situations. Jack is also the half brother of Claire Littleton, although neither of them is aware of this. Jack has formed very strong bonds with Kate and Juliet while he has been on the Island.

Default What about the people who didn't survive the crash?

If we all agree that FATE (possibly personified by Widmore, the Hanso Foundation, or Mr. Paik's corporation, etc.) destined the Losties to land on the island, what does that mean for the people who didn't survive the crash?

1.) Were they just collateral damage?
2.) Or were they judged even more harshly than the Losties and destined to be punished more harshly too?

Hierarchy of Worthiness for Inhabitants of the Island(???):
Least Worthy to Most Worthy:

The couple still seat-belted to their Oceanic chairs at the bottom of the pond come to mind...

The people who died shortly after the crash (the pilot, the marshall, Joanna who drowned on Day 6, etc.) somewhere in the middle

And so on moving up to a status of more worthy. (Goodwin, Nikki, Paolo, Colleen, Charley, etc.)

The survivors (Locke, Kate, Jack, Desmond, etc.) at the very top

Does this idea make sense to anyone besides me? Comments, anyone? 'Cause I'd sure like some feedback on this.

I think it would be interesting to know the back story of some of the characters that did die on the crash. I remember Claire talking about a married couple on their honeymoon and how in love they were. That example makes me think that maybe these people had found their happiness, their true nitch. They found some sort of completion in their lives, and were able to move on quickly, while a lot of our losties have a lot of emotional baggage to deal with.

i think that maybe the dead were just collateral damage, that is presuming that it was fate in some sort of form that led the losties to the island, unless all of these people were put there possibly by widmore to rid the world of them and the others being there and what happened afterwards was just coinsidence....

There are no coincidences in Lost!

(Hey, just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean they're NOT out to get me.)

well i didnt necessarily mean coincidence, i meant that it wasnt the intended outcome of the "fate" that led them to the island they were just left there to be out the way for whatever reason and everything that happened with the others etc was just what happened afterwards not necessarily the way this "fate" had it planned out

Yeah, but Fate plans everything out! Fate never says, "Oh, I dunno. I'll just make it up as I go along." That's what Fate's lazy cousin Happenstance says.

yeah but if someone like widmore was the so called "fate" that led them to the island then they are on the island as is their fate, however this might not go as far as to what happens when they get on the island

I like your thinking, because all of the people who did survive the crash all had "stuff" they needed to deal with.

Maybe only the characters who refuse to deal with their past die. I mean, when Mr. Eko refused to "confess" his sins and says he isn't sorry for anything he has done in the past, he gets killed by the island a.k.a. Smokey.
And when Locke sees Smokey in the first season, he is spared. Maybe because he is willing to deal with his past? That could be the reason why he survived after all.
Any thoughts?

Locke didn't want to deal with his past when it was tied to a pole and he had a knife in his hand, so I would have to respectfully disagree with you Kiwi. I think the writers are making it seem like the past matters to the plot, but there is a key ingredient to each Losties character that we are missing, and Smokey is not.
