This is how I would like to see season 4 begin .... Jack wakes up from a dream/vision of future events we saw in the last ep of season 3 .
Jack comes to on the beach as those that want to leave the Island are all packed and waiting for " Penny's Boat " . He suddently realizes that Locke IS right (hate to admit it ) As he looks around at all the familiar faces he tries to decide what he can possibly do to stop the chain of events that he himself has begun .....
I don't want them to leave the Island in season 4 . It will not be the same . The Island and characters and events there are what makes Lost so differant and intriging . If they come back to the real world so to speak I will be disapointed I think ....

I don't think you're going to get away from that, the phone call to the boat offshore has been made, help is on the way, if they had to defend the Island what exactly would they use? Handfuls of dirt, a coconut launcher? I think the boat will come, will launch tear gas or knockout gas, and they will wake up back in the real world for at least a while. I wish this weren't the case too, but I think they've kind of painted themselves into a corner now. Or have they? Maybe they'll do something that will totally blow our minds!

the helicopters will come i think as desmond predicted, but i think that they will not be abble to get away from the island.. remember the snow globe as des called it and the others told micheal he had to leave on a specific baring

True, but was that only true while the Swan station was operational, or is it still true at this moment? I got the impression much of the invisible/impermeable quality of the Island was currently in remission.

I guess it is still unknown what effect the Swan station had on the island's cloak from the rest of the world. It seemed to be pretty well established that the Looking Glass was responsible for jamming or blocking communications, but the effects of the Swan while it was operational and after its destruction are still a mystery for the most part. I am still not certain that Ben knows everything about the Swan station. When he was prisoner Henry I thought he seem to be genuinely trying to gather info about it. But then later we saw him and Juliet watching the losties in the Swan from the pearl station so he definitely knew about the Swan before being "captured". Anyways, back to the effects of the Swan. Naomi's helicopter crashed and that seems to have been due to some property of the island that I guess the Swan was keeping in check. Just like when Desmond was late pushing the button and the losties plane crashed. Also the guy that Jack talked to on Naomi's sat phone said something about being able to lock on the the phone's signal so he could fly to Jack's location for pickup/rescue. Maybe that is just that and he was talking about using the signal to get Jack's exact location, or maybe the guys on the boat still can't see the island or detect it on their equipment. So they need that phone signal to get to the island itself.
Well those are just a few of my thoughts. I hope I didn't overlook something, just doing this from what I remember.

i dunno im thinking its something more than just the swan station stopping them getitng off the island. the portugese scientists didnt find the island they found a vast electromagnetic anomoly so its still a difficult to find island, and whats more i think they not managing to get off the island was more to do with the jamming signal than the swan.

i dunno i just think it cant be that simple, it cant be voila rescued something has to get in the way, and maybe postpone it for a while

My thoughts exactly . How could it be that easy .... It really doesn't seem meant to be just yet . That's why I hope the end of season 3 was a vision/dream of things to come IF they leave . Jack could somehow convince a few key people to stop it . And what if Desmond gets back in time and tells them about Charlie and his last message , " not Penny's boat " that may be enough to convince some to wait ...

I hope the rescue boat/choppers are veeeeeeerrrrrryyyyyy ssssssssssssllllllllooooooowwwwww, because Des couldn't possibly make it to their location fast enough imho.

Considering Jack and them had to hike a couple of days to get to the location , it would take as long to get back to the beach for rescue and/or tell the other losties the news even if the choppers come , all that takes time , therefore Desmond could make it back in time to tell them what happened and Charlie's message because Des and Charlie weren't that far out from the beach location ... hey it's just me hoping they stay on the Island a while !

yeah hopefully, itll take to the end of the season for them to get off the island
