It doesn't seem to me that they would leave the island that quickly, if at all. Not in the first episode for sure. Some may finally leave, but they will drag it out a while.,, at least for a mid-season cliff-hanger. In my opinion.

I seem to remember it being said that when Desmond used the fail-safe key that the island could only be seen for a few minutes then was hidden again.. Like while the sky was purple you could see the island but not after a few minutes!
