This island, I believe, had animals transported there. They might've wanted to test out some experiments to have different sorts of animals to adjust to different climates.

Some oldish news..
I heard that the Smoke monster, is probably a 'reflection' in ones self. A few people've been killed when they saw the monster,(possibly because they weren't 'worthy' of the islands gifts) But Locke, who believes in the power of the island, was one to survive the smoke monster...
*shrugs*

Does anyone have clear still photos of all of those human images in the black smoke monster when Mr. Eko stares it down near the beginning of Season 2?

Well I thought the reason the polar bears were there was b/c Walt was looking at the Comic book with them and they "came to life" in the same way he was looking at the birds in that book and one crashed into his window. I thought it had something to do with Walt being "special." But as far as Smokey, that seems like something way beyond that.

I thought the polar bears were there from old Dharma experiments, that's why there were cages and Tom said to Sawyer, "The bears figured out in 2 hours." And since Polar Bears can swim, I thought maybe they had migrated to the Losties' island.

yea i think that the polar bears was put there by dharma to see if they can adjust to different climates.
However the others must of let them out. Just like the shark who they let out in the sea. I sure there are other animals on the island that should not be in a hot climate. Maybe there are penguins

If you've watched ''The Answers'' the producers tell us that the cages were kept for the polar bears.

i believe walt looking at a comic book with polar bears on it was simply ironic foreshadowing
