On the glowing map, it is written:

"Stated Goal: repatriation accelerated de-territorial [sic] of Ursus maritimus through gene therapy and extreme climate change"

Ursus maritimus is the polar bear. So, it appears that Dharma was definitely testing polar bears, and they are not some magical manifestation of Walt's specialness.

I could have sworn the images Eko saw were of his little brother, jesus being crucified, a black woman (mom?), and him as a child- but for sure there was an image of his young brother (cant think of his name)

Eko's little brother was named Yemi. The images you are seeing in the smoke can all be witnessed throughout Eko's life, and as many people have agreed the smoke was scanning his thoughts. I am pretty certain it has nothing to do with the slave ship.

I think that is why I think that Harper was a manifestaion of the island or smokey or what have you.. When Juliette see's Harper she says it's been a long time.. What happened to her after Goodwin headed to the tail section? Is it just because Juliette was with the survivors at the beach for a while.. I would assume that Smokey scanned Juliette in the jungle when she was with Kate.. Maybe that is why Harper was how Juliette was contacted??

I agree with you Wednighter. Harper just disappeared, and if it was really smokey then this would explain how.

Maybe the Polar Bear charlotte found in "Confirmed Dead" had the same problem as Desmond, Minkowski, and Daniel but it ended up not being able to get back to the future.
The future is the island. Richard told Juliet that time appears to fly on the island, so the polar bear went back to the past and died and then Charlotte found it.
