 Benjamin "Ben" Linus
Benjamin "Ben" Linus is the leader of the Others on the Island. Ben arrived on the Island as a child, brought by his father Roger to work for the DHARMA Initiative. Ben takes orders from Jacob, and is the only person who visits and speaks with him. Ben's apparent goal is to keep the Island and its special properties secret from the outside world, and he goes to great lengths to achieve this.

Hydra:A Possible Origin
The underwater hatch or outpost that Jack has been entrapped in has recieved the name "The Hydra Station". Hmm Hydra, Hydra is a mythical creature who battled Hercales in a swamp near Lake Lerna.
The Hydra was simular to a snake, and had many heads, it was simular to the beast described in the book of Revelations (But alot smaller..Heh.).
Also Hydra is a name of a Constellation.

I was just about to post that there is a microscopic creature--Hydra that scientists have interest about..!
Also, to answer the Swans question, it is said that in greek Mythology there is Apollo who rode on a swan to a place called Hyperboreans, where he would spend the winter. But it also says that his mother gave him the island, floating, named Delos, which was not a mainland/island/landmass.
It also said that the island was surrounded by swans...
Maybe this Greek Mythology is tied in with the fact that the island is unrecognisable (as BLinus stated: 'only God can see us'). That information is at link below, although MOST people have probably already seeing this...
