Default Antipodes

The Antipodes is a term that those in the U.K. use in referring to New Zealand and Australia. However it has a much more precise meaning in geography:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antipodes

Anyone have a globe and want to make a guess as to what spot on the Earth is the antipode of the island?

Before we do that, wouldn't we have to know where the island is?

I had read somewhere that Atlantis had an twin "continent" called Lumeria? It was located in the Southern Pacific, and located opposite or antipodes the continent of Atlantis on the globe.

I see where you are going with this. It seems like a good idea. I have read that some people
think that the location of the LOSTIES island is at:

Longitude:- 4.815
latitude:- 162.342

Emphasis on the numbers again.
This location is in the pacific, roughly off the route the plane could have possible taken.

http://maps.google.com/maps?q=4.815+...7195&t=k&hl=en

Now I’m certainly no expert on maps, or that clever. But to find the antipode, surely you find
the opposite longitude & latitude?? (please tell me if I’m wrong).

So;

180 - 4.815 = 175.185 (longitude)
180 - 162.342 = 17.658 (latitude)

Unfortunately I can’t find out how to find the location of this new place. So if anyone knows of
a way to find that location. GFI!

Probably completely wrong though. Input from someone FAR FAR FAR cleverererer would be
appreciated!

Ooooh fun! If you take the antipodes of that location: -4° 48' 54.00", +17° 39' 28.80" you end up in the Congo. If we're off a little on the location of the island, we could easily be in Zambia, which I believe is the crossed out African country where the Hanso Foundation ran into some trouble.

Thanks Sheriff!

Here is a description of how to find an antipode:
The antipodes of any place on Earth must be distant from it by 180° of longitude, and must be as many degrees to the north of the equator as the original is to the south; in other words, the latitudes are numerically equal, but one is north and the other south.

So for the latitude simply flip the sign (or change North to South, South to North).

For the longitude, take the absolute value of 180 - (original longitude).

Default Half a world away

Maybe I'm just looking for it, but it seemed like Eko emphasized the word "half" in ? when he said the plane took off from "half a world away."

Hi all Lost lovers,
Went to the below adress,

http://maps.google.com/maps?q=4.815+...7195&t=k&hl=en

zoomed out and I think that if the numbers relate to the location of the island then check this map out.

http://worldatlas.com/webimage/countrys/au.htm

We could logically deduce that the island is in a chain of islands belonging to either the Marshall Islands or Micronesia.
Was wondering why no-one had compared the google map with an actual atlas map and commented. Its too hard to be too precise but I guess its round about.
Thats my 7cents worth.
What does everyone else think?
Regards,

Vic
