Sort of Old: Was Boone A Thief?
I got to thinking about this when everyone was speculating about what Sawyer was going to do to Charlie when he figured out Charlie had taken one of the guns.
I checked all the character threads here, and figured I would formalize my observation about Boone, since it looks like no one else has picked up on it.
Boone stole the water. His excuse when caught? It was just lying around and he was going to keep an eye on it. But he didn't tell anyone. He just took the water and hid it.
Then Sawyer chatches Boone going through his stuff. Beats the crap out of him for being a thief. Boone counters that he was looking for Shannon's asthma medication. If you think about it, this is also a lame excuse. If he thought Sawyer had taken his stuff, why didn't he ask for it back? The most Sawyer could do (if he had it) would be to say, "No, it's mine now."
I think Boone was just taking the opportunity to riffle through Sawyer's collection to see if there was anything he (Boone) wanted. It was only after he was caught and beat-up that he said anything about Shannon's inhaler. He hadn't even asked Jack if any inhalers had been found, and Jack had had people gathering medications from the wreckage and baggage when he was treating the US Marshall (sorry, can't remember his name).
And then I thought, "Hey, what if Boone was in cahoots with his mom in cheating Shannon out of her inheritance?"
He's a thief. His mom made him head of the corporate empire, he controlled the money, and he had the hots for Shannon. From the flashbacks, he didn't seem too enthused about going to bat for Shannon against his mom, although he said he would do so--another little lie?
I wonder if this was supposed to be an ongoing developing storyline, except the writers couldn't figure out how to advance it (without being too obvious). And once they dropped the Boone/Shannon step-children incest angle, Boone really didn't have anything to do, story-wise. After Boone was killed, Shannon followed because the writers (or producers) figured they needed to tighten up the story structure of the whole show. Remember, they added the tailies, the opening of the hatch, Walt's kidnapping, the explosion of the raft (I'm talking the end of the first season, here), the possible death of Sawyer (last seen getting shot), Jin who dived into the water after him, and Michael clinging to what was left of the raft.
But back to Boone. What about the idea that his storyline was to be a thief, contrasting with Sawyer's con man (who, technically, is not a thief because con man don't have to steal the stuff from you, they get you to actually give it to them). This might have led to the kind of character friction that Jack and Sawyer are experiencing right now--except with Boone it would have been between two types of "thieves." And Sawyer would really be down on Boone because in his eyes, Boone would be the worst type of thief: a rich kid who takes stuff cause he thinks he can get away with it.
Any comments?

"Whoa!" she said. "Cry 'Havoc!' And let loose the dogs of war!"
And, like Banquo's ghost, they just won't go away.
