Hugo "Hurley" Reyes

Hugo "Hurley" Reyes is one of the middle section survivors of Oceanic Flight 815. Hurley's father disappeared when he was at a young age for almost 17 years. Afterwards, Hurley suffered an eating-disorder and after a traumatic accident he was sent to a mental asylum when he started seeing an imaginary person. Ever since, he has changed and has been extremely concious of his sanity and how people view him. When Hurley won the lottery, he was not overjoyed, instead he was fearful that his life was going to change. Hurley is typically happy-go-lucky and keeps the spirits of his fellow survivors up. He has an eating disorder but has managed to overcome that with the help of Libby, and has even stuck to it after her death. He is also the voice of reason in the group, and uses his common sense to solve difficult situations. Ever since winning the lottery with the mysterious numbers, he has searched for an answer for the curse of bad luck that supposedly plagues him.

Default sdrawkcab (No I am not off my rocker)

Im sure most of you noticed tonight in "The Whole Truth" Bernard and Sawyer start talking backwards, yeah watch it again if you have to, they are not speaking english.

And Jin was of course was as dumbfounded by this as I was.

Why the hell where they talking backwards?

Sawyer - Let Sunshine tell him
Sawyer - Hell no.
Bernard - You should tell him
Bernard - Well
Sawyer - not my place
Bernard - Why don't you tell him?
Sawyer - I've got my sources

They were talking backwards so theire conversatio was obviously reversed, so this is what it was in order chronologically.

Sawyer - I've got my sources
Bernard - Why don't you tell him?
Sawyer - Not my place
Bernard - Well you should tell him
Sawyer - Hell no. Let sunshine tell him.

Was that backwards talk? I thought it was Korean, and I thought Jin might understand them, but obviously later we learned he didn't.

IMO, I think the writers were letting us feel the situation from Jin's point-of-view... Poor guy, everything sounds backwards to him!

I agree, It was just to show how hard it is for him to be that isolated. Didn't they use the same type of affect when Michael accused him of burnning up the boat.
It was the beach sceen, when he was surounded and everyone is P.O.ed. It was right before Sun yelled out in English for the first time.

As you say, I took that to be how the conversation sounded to Jin. Heaven knows, Sawyer is aware he doesn't have to mask what he says in English since Jin has been shown repeatedly to only understand a few English phrases.

I agree with everyone - English is to Jin what Korean is to most of us.

But, maybe the show just had Sawyer and Bernard's English played backwards. Anyway to find out what was said?

The show just had them sounding like jibberish to show what it is like for Jin.
That's why they never have sbutitles if Jin is speaking to an English
speaking character - we just have to figure it out by his gestures or maybe
catching someone's name.
When Jin is talking to Sun he says "I can't talk to anyone." He has picked up
a few words, but he can't have conversations yet and he wants to.

Best way to learn a language,be immersed in it. He needs to start letting Sun teach him..He seems more mellow now, more willing to learn.

We know he is already learning some just by hearing certain things over and over. And,yes, immersion is the best way of learning. It's very frustrating
at first but then it's interesting how you start to understand.
When I play CD's with native speakers for my students they throw their
hands up in frustration and say "they talk too fast!!" and I always say
"NO, you're listening too slowly." After the 3rd or 4th time my students
swear I am somehow playing the CD more slowly and now they can understand and I explain that the speaking is the same speed as before
but their ears and brains can make more sense of it.
Go, Jin! We'll have you fluent by next Fall.
