Alright.... The episode 'Walkabout' and the Episode 'Orientation' both tell Locke's background story. The girl on the phone in 'Walkabout' is named Helen, he invites her to go on the walkabout, but she says she can't see a client and that they aren't allowed meet clients. If you remember, Katie Sagal (Of Married With Children and Futurama fame) is also named Helen. Now, He met Katie Sagal before he lost the ability to walk, and he talks to the lady on the phone after he loses the ability to walk. The Helen on the phone doesn't sound like Katie Sagal, and also is a phone hooker obviously. Now I'm wondering the significance of this. Was Locke so obsessed with the Helen on the phone because he lost Katie Sagal and he was trying to mentally and emotionally project Katie Sagal onto the Helen on the phone? Locke was in the wheelchair for 4 years before the plain crash, and had been talking to the Helen on the phone for 8 month, obsess much?

I think that Locke enjoys to have a purpose. This is whether he needs to save the Island or talk to someone on the phone or go on a walkabout.

I also think he over obsesses on his purposes (much like me while watching LOST) so when he loses his attachments he hurries to cling to another one.
Kate Segal does not really sound like Helen on the phone, though many people sound different on a phone.

Maybe the phone sex operator's name isn't Helen. A lot of times people call these numbers to try and fulfill fantasies, so he wanted to call her Helen, and she let him rollplay his fantasy out because he was hurt after losing the real Helen.

I think you hit the nail on the head, Sputnik. I think he missed her so much and didn't have any women in his life, so he was desparate. Kinda sad, when you think about it. If anyone on the island found that out, he'd be bunking with Charlie in the Outcast Bunk.
