Default Why was Eko killed off?

Do any of you guys know why Eko was killed off? Did he have other projects after Lost or was it always the producers' plan to have him on for a limited number of shows?

Do you guys feel there was something important he accomplished before he died, and that's why he was no longer needed? He pointed out that there was heroine in the Mary statues, he provided the missing piece of the DHARMA Swan Orientation Video, and he dealt with his issues with his brother. So was his job as a character done once he had accomplished these things? Is that it?
Maybe he was too much of a competitior with Locke for "Islands Most Spiritual Lostie"? And he was taking too much of the focus away from Locke?

Thoughts?

The actor who played Eko (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje) didn't go on to be in any other projects until recently. I don't know what fueled his departure from the show but it seems they got rid of nearly all the tailies. I personally was relieved to see him go, I couldn't stand his character and felt like his story lines took away from the rest of the show. Who knows, if he stuck around maybe I would have changed my opinion on him. I had once felt the same way about Locke.

i actually really liked eko's character. i didn't feel comfortable with the way he died. did any of you think that his "vision" of his brother was a malicious one leading him to his death? maybe he was ready to sacrifice himself like charlie.

Locke and Eko were my favorite characters.
Now, Locke, Ben, and Sayyid are my favorites.

I miss Eko. he was cool. I'd watch a 10 hour Eko only marathon if it came out.

I love the Jesus Stick. But Eko himself was rather annoying. In Season 3 he was just adding unnesecary weight. And his final episode was rather boring throughout.

I liked Eko's character and not really sure why it was necessary to kill him off. But for that matter not really sure why Boone and Shannon had to die.

I guess the writers felt these characters stories were complete and they could kill them off and keep the tension on fans worrying that any character might be killed off at any time.

I read that the original script for the pilot episode had Jack die. And one of the reasons for this was to show that no character was safe.

I agree, wasn't a big fan of Mr. Eko.

I hope {insert your favorite character's name here} dies a slow, agonizing needless death.

That's right Folie! Originally, Kate was going to be the leader of the group. Also, orginally, there was no Charlie character, but the Lost Powers loved Dominic and so they basically created a character just for him to be in the show.

Purely rumor, but I have read it several places (long ago when Mr. Eko's death had just occurred) that a) the actor was difficult to work with and b) one possible reason for that was that he wanted out to be able to do some directing. Take it with a grain of salt....
