Kate's parents (all 3 of 'em)

Why did all 3 of Kate's parents (Diane, Sam, and Wayne) lie to Kate and about who her real father is? I mean, why bother telling Kate about Sam Austen at all? It would have been so much simpler for everyone if Kate had grown up a Janssen. Sam Austen was already never around because of his military duties and her mother finally had the man she loved when she married Wayne.

Does it mean that Diane believed in her heart that Wayne was a really bad guy and wanted to give Kate a shot at a decent man for a father?--Even if Kate would hardly ever see Sam? Maybe Diane suspected that Wayne would try to molest Kate and she didn't want Kate to have to think of it as incest? But, then again, if Diane REALLY wanted Kate to have a decent father and she was already lying that Sam was Kate's father, why not give Kate to Sam and keep her the hell away from Wayne forever?

Lostpedia says that Wayne probably doesn't know that Kate is his real daughter, yet it's clear from "What Kate Did" that Sam knew. Why would Diane keep the truth from Wayne but not from Sam?

Hey, how funny is it that Sam and Diane couldn't make it work on Lost. They never could make it work on Cheers either. :-p

Kate's mom is whacked, that's why. It's strange for me to think of a woman who would be loyal first to her lover, not her child. Though I suppose a goode deal of them must exist, because if not then there wouldn't be as many abused children on this earth. It's just seems so unnatural to me, though.

i speak from experience when i say that mothers dont always put their children first. kate's mom loved this man, and i suppose that love is a funny thing, in kates moms mind, it doesnt matter how close she was to the person who killed him, they killed the man she loved and deserved to be punished

i guess also in her mind was fear of what kate might do to her, kate killed her father and her mom might have thought she might kill her too for lieing to her or the man she always believed was her father

Answering my own question & asking some others:

1.) Reading up at Lostpedia, I realized that Diane and Sam Austen didn't split up until Kate was in high school or maybe middle school. This explains why Diane kept Sam around, even though she was in love with Wayne, and why Kate believed Austen was her father. Diane didn't get back together with Wayne (Kate's actual biological father) until Kate was in high school.

2.) This must mean that when middle school-aged Kate tells Tom Brennan in the audio tape (the one they dig up with the time capsule) that he's the only one knows why she wants to run away--it must be something other than Wayne abusing her because supposedly Wayne wasn't around then. (Was he in the area, but just not seeing Kate's mom? Was he totally out of the picture then?) Could someone else have been abusing her? Thoughts? What do you all think?

3.) What still isn't explained is why Sam knew he wasn't Kate's biological father but Wayne never knew that he WAS actually Kate's father. Sam would know it because the dates wouldn't add up. Why would Diane keep that information Wayne or from Kate? But especially from Wayne, when he was the love of her life???

in answering one of your questions, i think she kept it from wayne because wayne did not want children or wayne would have rejected kate and dint want to be her father.............or deep down she knew sam was a better father to her

Sam also tells Kate that he didn't tell her because he knew this (meaning kill Wayne) is what she would do... Then Kate asks why he didn't kill Wayne.. He said cause he doesn't have murder in his heart... Or something like that!

So, Wednighter, it seems that even as a child Kate was what the Others would call "not a good person" if Sam Austen knew she was capable of killing Wayne. What else do you think she did as a child or that happened to her as a child that resulted in "not being a good person"?

i think the whole not a good person thing is very open to interpretation kate was not a good person because she killed, but at the end of the day she has proven she can be a good person on the island, she helps out, she goes back to find the rest of them,

AUSTEN: I didn't tell you because I knew you'd kill him. And your mother loved him. You were 5 years old. I wanted to take you along with me. She wouldn't let me.

KATE: So why didn't you kill him?

AUSTEN: Because I don't have murder in my heart. I'm going to have to call them.

KATE: Can I have an hour?

[He nods, and Kate hugs him.]

I think it had more to do with how much she hated Wayne and loved Sam that he knew she would kill him if she ever found out that he was her real father..

Wayne was probably one bad dude, and Kate would feel then that his evil genes are part of hers. She must have really wanted Sam, his heroism, his calmness, his nurturing way to be part of her, and the fact that now that isn't part of her made her feel like a murderer, and why not follow through with those feelings.
