On orphans

CHARACTERS WITH AT LEAST 1 DEAD PARENT:

AARON - Father abandons him and his mother, Claire, before his birth.

ANALUCIA CORTES - Mother is alive, but father is M.I.A., right?

BENJAMIN LINUS - Mother dies in childbirth. Later appears as a ghost (maybe?) on the island. Father is gassed to death by adult Ben.

BOONE - Stepfather died in a car accident. Real father is M.I.A. (Do we know that story?)

CHARLIE - Mother is dead, isn't she?

CLAIRE - Father drank himself to death in Australia. Later appears as a ghost (maybe?) on the island to her half brother, Jack. Jack and Claire haven't yet discovered that they are half siblings. Mother is braindead in a hospital Australia after a car accident.

MR. EKO - Grows up with his brother, Yemi, in an orphanage in Nigeria.

HURLEY - Father abandoned him when he was a child. Only showed up again when Hurley won the lottery.

JACK - Father drank himself to death in Australia.

KATE - Murders her real father (at the time she thinks he is only her stepfather) by blowing up his trailer. Mother abandons Kate afterwards. The man she believed to be her father gives her a 10 minute headstart before calling the police on her--ultimately, he also abandons Kate.

JIN - Lies that both of his parents are dead. Both are actually alive (Mother is a prostitute/Father who raised him is a fisherman, though he never knew for certain who Jin's father was)

LOCKE - His mother gave him away at birth and he grew up in foster homes. Father conned Locke into giving him a kidney.

SAWYER - Father killed his wife and himself in a murder-suicide after he learned his wife was having an affair and was going to leave him. Mother was actually being conned by Locke's real father. whose real name is Sawyer.

SHANNON - Father died in a car accident. Stepmother abandons her financially at her father's death. Abandoned her emotionally long before. Real mother is M.I.A. Dead?

YEMI - Grows up with his brother, MR. EKO, in an orphanage in Nigeria.

1.) Did I leave anyone out?

2.) Is there a Dickens theme going on here? I ask because of all the orphans (actual and emotional) AND because of the novel that Desmond saves for just before his death, _Our Mutual Friend_ by Charles Dickens.

I totally forgot about Walt! Wow, that makes 17 characters!
Walt was abandoned by 3 parents. His biological father, Michael, was talked into giving up all rights as a parent when Walt was still a baby. Mother died of some quick sickness when he was 10. Stepfather passed Walt back to Michael once his wife died. Michael further tried to pass off Walt to his (Michael's) mother just before flight 815 took off.

Bernard and Rose! I bet their parents aren't alive!

I didn't read a mutual friend, but what I have noticed about MANY of the books associated with Lost, parents lead to issues. Heck, don't they with everyone though.. Anyway, in teh Dark Tower series, the main characters mother is cheating on his father, and he accidentally kills his mother, and father isn't around. The Fountainhead, a main character is pushed into a life he really doesn't want by his overbearing mother. The Third Policemen, a main character longs for a father or mother figure and seems to cling to anyone who resembles a figure at all.
I'm guessing Lost is that name for many reasons, and perhaps a ending theme would be that all of these people will make a family of who is left at the end, and not be so Lost anymore.

Annie was an orphan.... oh, wait........ different Annie!

And isn't Kates mom dead? In the episode "Born to run", Kate says that quote: "Diane is dying of cancer" quote end How long ago was that? Do you think she's dead by now?

Well I guess I am just being picky, but.....
Sawyer, Eko, and Yemi are the only orphans.
I mean technically speaking isn't an orphan a child that has lost both his/her parents to death.
Everybody's parents eventually die.
Locke grew up without his parents, but I wouldn't say he was orphaned so much as he was abandoned.
anyways just wanted to point that out.

Well, don't forget that not as much time has passed on the show as it has in real life. It's probably only been a month or so since "Born to Run". But, yeah, she probably is dead by now. She could hardly speak back then, but Kate won't know until she gets back to civilization. IF she ever gets there...

I'm still holding fast to my parallel timelines theory and I"m not convinced that if she does return to civilization that it will be the same timeline she left. Jack in the flash forward talking about Christian as though Christian is still alive being just ONE piece of evidence for my theory. I know a lot of you disagree, but vee veel see, von't vee? (<--best evil Russian accent)
