Fully remembering the writer's promise, I still found Ecko's comment to Bernard interesting. It could just be an offhand comment to further the Mr. Ecko's character dynamic. Or, maybe not.

I think what I find most troubling is that Mr. Ecko's obsession with building the church solidified after his conversation with Henry. During that conversation it seemed as if Ecko had some kind of enlightening experience and was now ready to betray the losties. I can only think of two contexts for this conversation. Either Mr. E has made the assumption that the others are the more powerful group and are therefore the ones to side with for the purpose of self preservation. Or, that they are those to support for reasons which are morale in nature.

A man who has just decided to sell out his peers for the purpose of survival does not find himself pios enough to construct a house of worship. That only leaves one alternative.

On one other note relating to the writer's promise, I am sure it has already been mentioned, but Cerberus was the guard dog of the underworld. His job was to keep the dead from crossing making it to the world of the living and the living from making it to the world of the dead.
