Folks, please be reminded that this is television.
People don't forget birthdays like real life - they're SCRIPTED to forget birthdays, which means the writers needed a way to make Bernard relevant to us so he can be used later. My guess is he becomes a victim of some Lord-Of-The-Flies-style killin' or Henry Gale kills him.
