RX-1 (the medicine) explained

Ok guys, I don't think this has come up yet so here it goes.
I'm a student of Celular and Molecular Biology and Biotechnology and did a little research in scientific papers and articles in the net and here's what I found out.
Rx1 is a strain of Streptococcus pneumoniae, which is the bacterial pathogen that causes pneumonia. The virulent factors of the disease are originated in a protein called protein A or PspA. It's named like that because it maps a region of DNA and they called it that. I recognized it from some books cause I studied it while studying cloning.
The Rx1 strain however is a mutation of this PspA and though I didn't find much information on it specifically I believe from the articles I read it is not dangerous because it's unencapsuled which makes it non-pathogenic. That also makes it an ideal candidate for the organism to create protections against it - hence the vaccine form - because it doesn't hurt you at all.
So the sickness they talk about could very well be a genetically controled strain of pneumonia which can be used by Dharma for their shady purposes.
That's all I know by now and I'm sorry if it was a bit confusing but I'll try to find more about it tomorrow at my college library because most articles online are blocked.
