This is a re-post from another thread but it pertained here and I saw the same question asked so I thought Id throw in my two cents.

"You know I hadnt realized that when Michael left with Walt on the boat and left Sawyer, Kate, and Jack stranded with the others that Ben had told him to stay on a heading of 325. That is very intruiguing. Ill have to think on that awhile.

Perhaps when Desmond turned the fail-safe key (which if you recall was the exact moment that Kate, Jack, and Sawyer were tied up on the dock with Ben and the Others) Ben must have recognized what was going on. Since we can go back and view it in hindsight, we now realize that the effects of the surroundings of the Island when Desmond turned the fail-safe key are remarkably similar to what happened when Ben moved the Island. Perhaps Ben realized that the Island was being moved or had been moved and therefore the bearing of the wormhole had changed and thus it was 325, how he would have been able to maintain those calculations so instantly would be a mystery. Then again, maybe Ben, in the shock of the moment wondering who the hell could possibly be moving the Island right now, simply forgot that it would be moving, thus changing the bearing of the wormhole and he simply divulged unto Michael the "old" bearing which was 325, and after Desmond had "moved" the Island it changed to a heading of 305 which is possibly what Daniel Faraday discovered along with the rest of the scientists when in that moment that Desmond turned the fail-safe key the Island became momentarily visible to the outside world, broadcasting its "new" heading from being moved a hop-skip-and a jump over from the previous 325 heading to the new 305 heading, so when it broadcasted to Penellope Widmores people on the research facility, they read it as 305.

The only loop that would leave would be....that at that moment the key was turned, the heading of travel you would have to follow to maintain transportation directly in the center of the wormhole was moved from 325 to 305 so therefore how did Michael and Walt come to the island they found by travelling on the "old" and incorrect heading of 325? Then again perhaps you do not really "need" the bearing to LEAVE the Island, it was probably given to Michael as a general means of direction to be able to find a civilization nearby to help. But to get TO the Island, now that bearing must be a necessity.

I hope all of that makes sense, its probably a bit confusing. What we do know for a fact was that the previous heading was 325, as Ben gave it to Michael. And on that very day, in my opinion the Island was moved or shifted or maybe it was even masked for what seemed a brief moment to the inhabitants of the Island but in reality and in real time it may have been masked for days even weeks, untill the new arrivals started happening by Naomi, Daniel, C.S "Charlotte" Lewis and so on."
