Kate Austen is one of the middle section survivors of Oceanic Flight 815. Kate is a fugitive, and was being pursued by Marshal Mars prior to the flight, for blowing up her father. Kate had been captured in Australia and was being escorted back to the United States before the crash. Kate has always seemed to run away from her past. Even on the Island, Kate exhibits a kind of evasive behavior to escape from her problems. Kate, when on the run, always had good intentions and never did any outright harm or killings to anybody, she believed she was doing things for the greater benefit of others. This view is prominently connected with her actions of her father's murder - she believed she was relieving her mother from his abusive presence. Kate is strong-willed, useful and clever, but dislikes being alone and is usually level-headed.
She has escaped from the captivity of the Others with Sawyer, and has formed an ambiguous romantic relationship with him, despite still being unsure about her feelings for Jack.

Hmm, I was watching the video in georgiaknight33's post,
Spoiler for spoiler:
and I noticed a flash. Thought it was odd, so I watched the video a second time. I saw it again, but this time I saw a person, for the past 15 minutes I have been trying to pause at just the right moment and got it. Not sure what this is, maybe it's already been found, but thought I would share.
That's
Spoiler for guy in the spoiler:
Gerald Degroot, one of the founders of the DI.

I thought it was telling how Ben mentioned that the saltines were 15 years old. So they last time they were forced to take these measures was 15 years ago. And Horace said he had been dead for 12. Just trying to find a timeline
Thanks for the link I love the guy who wrote it.. Makes some of the complicated things so simple to understand!

Or maybe when the war with Dharma and the Others began and took place at the Orchid. Maybe the mirror was how they knew who was coming up the mountain so they could protect the Orchid. The crackers was there because if it was not safe or unable to come up, they had something to eat

Fans will also see a new Dharma station called the Orchid - all three levels of it - that might shed more light on the Island's time-warping properties. Peripheral faves like Penelope, ageless Other Richard Alpert (Nestor Carbonell), and off-Island mystery man Matthew Abaddon (Lance Reddick) will pop up. But due to the strike, two breakout freighter newbies - frazzled physicist Daniel Faraday (Jeremy Davies) and ghost-whispering hustler Miles Straume (Ken Leung) - won't be getting their spotlights until next year. Maybe Hurley was a member of the DHARMA Initiative in a different timeline, and he knew he'd be back one day AND hungry so he left himself some saltines? Low fat, but still satisfying. Just kidding.

How come a laser would travel slower than the speed of light? A laser is light, so wouldn't it travel at the same speed? Science was never my strongest subject. I'm confused. 'Splain me some science, IAM.
You're right, I just didn't explain myself that well. What I meant to say was that the laser wouldn't be the combined velocity like the baseball/truck example.
Johnlockeroks, you're right too, I was just using that simple example to explain the point about the speed of light. You know, round cow?
