Items that Richard showed to young Locke

What was in the vial?

There was a book of law, a compass, a comic book, a knife, and a baseball glove...am I missing anything?

I personally thought the vial contained some stuff that Locke mixed and rubbed on his wounds to heal them.

Locke says that you're either a farmer or a hunter. His most recent flashback and previous ones show that he's been struggling with his true nature his entire life. One item he selected was a knife, representing the hunter role. I believe the other one was a vial of seeds, representing the farmer role.

That would explain Richard's frustration, possibly being upset that John didn't understand his path yet.

I was thinking it was sand or ash from the island in the vial, maybe?

maybe it was the same ash that was spread around Jacob's cabin when Locke first found it?

It did look like granules of salt or sand or ash of some sort. I remember Jacob's ash being a dark grey color, though. The comic book was called "Mystery Tales" from marvel and it said "What was the secret of the mysterious 'HIDDEN LAND?'" on the cover. Does anyone remember what comic book Walt was reading way back in season one?

I think it was a spanish comic featuring Green Lantern and the Flash. I can't recall what the title was though.

oh, then nevermind- haha.

The baseball glove seemed out of place. The lottery numbers correspond to numbers on retired NYY uniforms, or something like that. Then Redsox/Yankees has come up several times, most recently in the August 2007 newspaper Jack was reading. Now a baseball glove. I doubt it has any meaning, just that the writers like baseball.
