Maybe the older looking compass was originally Jacobs and Richard wanted to test if Locke was the re-incarnate?

Maybe these items have nothing to do with Locke's 'future' (from the time perspective that Richard greets him as a child) as much as it does Jacob's past.

Interesting thought, for certain!

Here is a great shot of the comic book. It is eerie! What is the secret of the mysterious hidden land? Does it pay to ignore the voice of warning? Is the cloud city the city skyline which appears upside down in the Lost logo?

I like this line of thought, what exactly were the writers trying to portray by "the reflected city" Also I wish the image of the comic didn't cut off the year it was made. I can kind of see the month, it looks like April. or APR.

Darnzy - how about this! The comic book that Richard Alpert showed young John Locke was Mystery Tales issue #40. This issue was published April, 1956.

Cool, so that kind of points to the comic book as being something "past life" Locke would not have owned, I'm guessing. I said somewhere in another thread that the Buddy Holly song "everyday" was released on September 29, 1957. Does anyone know what year Locke was born by any chance?

John Locke was born to Emily Annabeth Locke and Anthony Cooper on May 30, 1956 And this is from Lostpedia -John's firearm license states that his birth date is November 15, 1946 and his driver's license has his birth date as March 30, 1956. Considering that his mother was born on October 15, 1940, it can be assumed that the 1956 birth date is correct (she would have been 15 or 16); otherwise, his mother would have been six when she gave birth to him. This could have been a production error, or possibly the firearm license was a forgery, meaning Locke was illegally in possession of the weapons.

So what are we going to do about those dates????

Cassaloma - no, I think that is exactly what the producers wanted us to think. I know that was my first reaction to seeing the compass. I wanted to grab a screencap as soon as possible to check that out! Just like I thought of Jack when I saw the baseball glove (Red Sox) and I thought of Hurley when I saw the comic book. It was a big tease...

Does anybody find it weird that all the items were separated but the comic book and the knife? Richard placed the knife on top of the comic instead off to the side. Or am I making something out of nothing?

Any normal" boy would have grabbed the comic, the knife, and the baseball glove
not sand,a compass, and then the knife....Not that John Locke has ever been,or ever will "be normal."
