Dr. Juliet Burke

Dr. Juliet Burke (née Carlson) is a member of the Others. She seems unhappy with her allegiance (particularly, it seems, with Ben's position of authority), and lives at the Barracks. Juliet is a calm, intelligent woman with a background in medicine, but unhappy with her private life and will do anything to get off the Island. However, it seems Juliet has betrayed her people and joined the survivors in wanting off the island.

I guess it wasn't some ratty old book.
I kind of thought that the Book of Law would be Richard's preference for Locke, too. Not that he hinted toward that or anything, like I wrote elsewhere, considering the content and main idea of it..

Maybe the book would be Ben's choice... And knowing Ben or thinking along those lines Richard had the expectation that Locke would take the book, thus show how special he is in Ben's fashion..But remember how Locke said to Ben "I am not you"..? That could have something to do with Locke's choices with Richard's objects.

I thought it looked pretty obvious from the scene that Richard wanted Locke to pick the comic book, especially considering the other two things he chose (island compass and island sand i think) clearly relate to the island, and the cover of the comic looked related to the island too. I figured since Richard wanted Locke to choose things he "already owned" that he wanted Locke to prove to him that he owned the island.

I thought of Jack for the baseball glove too, but later I realized that that's probably because his character in Party of Five (Charley Salinger) played baseball. Do we know that Jack Shepherd played baseball on Lost?

Hurley - comic book
Jack - glove
etc....

An interesting idea and the symbolism you come up with makes a lot of sense, however, it also makes it seem as though every choice was the right choice. Clearly, we know that not all choices are the right choice because Alpert stormed out frustrated and in a huff when Locke chose the wrong object.

The knife represents the hunter side. Shows aggression. The glove represents his willingness to help people. If you have ever read The Catcher In The Rye it is sort of the same thing. The main character saw himself as the protector of the innocence of children catching them before they become corrupt. The vial represents the island. Something that would show Richard he is connected to the island

The second time I watched I was looking very specifically at Richard Alpert to see if he gave any sort of hint, even an iota, to what he wanted John to pick and I agree with you Flaneuse, I didn't see anything. Darn it! I wish we knew what he wanted John to pick!

On another msg board I read that the compass was one Locke eventuallly gives to Sayid and the book of laws was the container Eko found the Dharma tape in. So it seems like all the objects had some connection to things Locke would either own later or know about later.

You know, that's funny because I have read the opposite about the compass. That it is completely different from Locke's. Let me see if I can find a pict or two.

Okay - here's what I could find. I don't think the compasses look the same. What do you think?
