James Ford

James Ford, better known by the alias of "Sawyer", is one of the middle section survivors of Oceanic Flight 815. Sawyer's early life was ravaged by the con man who ultimately claimed both his parent's lives through conning them, instantly orphaning him. As a child, he wrote a letter to this con man, hoping to deliver it to him in person one day. Sawyer set out to search for him, presumably after he left school, however he, himself, ultimately became a con man and became the man he was hunting, became Sawyer. Revenge plays a big part in Sawyer's life, starting with the real Sawyer. On the island, Sawyer has often used his abilities to con people to get his wishes, and keeps a stash of useful items with him. However, after the death of the real Sawyer, he has begun to rethink his ways and is slowly turning into a leader for the survivors.

He escaped from the captivity of the Others with Kate, and has formed a relationship with her.

I think the book of law represents the logical side. If he chose it, that will mean he will use logic as opposed to emotion to make decisions. The compass represents direction. He will be able to find his way both literally and mentally. He can become a leader. The comic book represents his imagination. He will have the ability to look at things from outside the box. The knife represents the hunter side. Shows aggression. The glove represents his willingness to help people. If you have ever read The Catcher In The Rye it is sort of the same thing. The main character saw himself as the protector of the innocence of children catching them before they become corrupt. The vial represents the island. Something that would show Richard he is connected to the island

Doesn't the comic book belong to Hurley originally? Then Walt is reading it season one? I believe that was the comic with the polar bears in it.

Easy, Darnzy. I absolutely hate it when people write "IMO" or "IMHO". It is redundant, as anything you say is your opinion unless you are quoting someone.

Gabrielle, you might be on to something there in that there are those who speculate that Richard was in control of the island before Ben. Richard's rejection of John might just be the catalyst that put Ben in control.

I also think it was a vial of seeds.

Thanks for the pictures Bella.

I think Locke did pick the sand- but I'm not really quite sure if Alpert wanted him to go for the comic book. I almost immediately associated it with Hurley and the baseball glove with Jack- and felt that it would be reasonable for Locke to pick the knife. It'd come handy regardless of being a farmer or hunter underneath, especially if you're to go on some 'walk about'..

Some have quickly dismissed 'The Book of Law' but content and message-wise it wouldn't be an off choice totally. I think the title is deceiving for many: it is not a book with reference to logic or law as understood in some rigid fashion. It is a book that puts will power and strength to challenge established norms above everything else. Sounds familiar?

You know, when I saw the baseball glove I thought of Jack first. I wonder if each of those things could have belonged to someone else from the island? Could others own stuff just like Kid Locke owned something?

Hurley - comic book
Jack - glove
etc....

I was looking around for some research on "The Book of Law" and couldn't find much of anything. Anyway, my impression from watching was that Richard wanted him to pick the "book of law" or "laws". I think young Locke was under the impression he was going to be able to keep the things he chose, so when his eyes went from the book to the knife I think he chose what he'd like to own best. I guess it wasn't some ratty old book.
