Boone Carlyle
Boone Carlyle was a middle section survivor of Oceanic Flight 815 and was Shannon's stepbrother. He attempted to assume a semi-leadership role with the survivors but failed due to being rash and young, though he became Locke's apprentice when the two formed a close bond. Boone survived on the Island for 41 days before he died of injuries sustained in a fall whilst he tried to contact 'rescuers' from the drug smugglers' plane. According to Locke, Boone was a sacrifice the Island demanded.

Explanation for Jacob?????????
Here are snippets from a wiki article:
Operation Ghost was an alleged naval military experiment at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, sometime around October 28, 1943, in which the U.S. destroyer escort USS Eldridge was to be rendered invisible to human observers for a brief period of time.
The experiment was conducted by Dr. Franklin Reno (or Rinehart) as a military application of a Unified Field Theory, a term coined by Einstein. The Unified Field Theory postulates the interrelated nature of the forces that comprise electromagnetic radiation and gravity
The equipment was further alleged not to have properly been re-calibrated to this end, but in spite of this, the experiment was performed again on October 28. This time, Eldridge is alleged to have not only become almost entirely invisible to the naked eye, but actually vanished from the area in a flash of blue light.
However, the U.S. naval base at Norfolk, Virginia, just over 215 miles (346 km) away, is alleged to have reported sighting the Eldridge offshore, whereupon the Eldridge vanished from their sight and reappeared in Philadelphia at the site it had originally occupied, in an apparent case of accidental teleportation.
The alleged physiological effects of the experiment on the crew were profound: almost all of the crew were violently ill. Some were alleged to have suffered from mental illness as a result of their experience; behavior consistent with schizophrenia is described in other accounts. Still other members, like Jacob D. Murray, were physically unaccounted for — supposedly “vanished” — and five of the crew were allegedly fused to the metal bulkhead or deck of the ship.

Thank you Lostlos! I have brought up the philadelphia experiment before but no one seemed to give it much thought. As for doubters that this experiment actually happened, it doesn't really matter does it? It's a TV show, they could come on next week and say the philadelphia experiment really did happen. And maybe Jacob was a survivor of the experiment in the world of Lost. Anything is possible.

True. I just don't think Jacob is a real person at all.

Im putting my money on:
Smokey is a collective of dead souls, of good people who helped the island (and is also responsible for all the whispering).
Jacob is a collective of all the "chosen ones" that have died, but are meant to remain on the island (sort of like the x-Jedi's)

Thanks for sharing the info on the Philadelphia experiment LostLos I too think that there's a curious connection btw this and 'having to move the island to save it' message Locke got in cabin. Even long before that it was quite clear that some travel in space-time continuum was part of the deal with the island.
Majority of Nicola Tesla's lifetime works have later been credited to Einstein unfortunately. The scientific idea behind P.E. is one of those Tesla was working on since 1930s and thinking it would have drastic consequences, he had withdrawn himself from the project short before his death.
