Or perhaps this show is based off of "Floating Island," by Elizabeth Hayden. Maybe the island is simply a ship as described in the book. The Floating Island - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

And someone has built a floating island, Man (Re)Builds Mexican Island Paradise on 250,000 Recycled Floating Bottles | ecoble - ecological design, green innovation and environmental sustainability

One of the questions about the island, (first season) How was Dharma getting all the electricity? apparently, if you build a self sufficient island, you can power it also.

So, they can physically move the island with the em back up and no one would find the island again.

Here's an interesting read on the possibility of actually moving the island!

Proof it'll be a physical move, not one through time is that Ben is said to have moved the Island again. If they had moved through time, Ben's age wouldn't line up with the period in which he was born, which he roughly seems to be. People are obsessed with moving through time because of the "Constant" episode and the time travel stuff that follows. This island has LOTS of special properties, moving may just be a new one.

Any other bearing puts you at a different time on the island (I assume because the doctor washed up prior to dying on the freighter) But what is to stop Widmore from hiring a lot of people and send them at different bearings until they get it right? Seems too easy for Widmore to get back to the island.
This is very feasable, if the bearing is changed, then it would present alot of problems in finding the island, and the bearing is very very specific, so it could prove extremely difficult to find. I personally believe that the moving of the island is the changing of this bearing. Also, remember the episode when the scientist had the boat launch a payload at a specific bearing and he timed the time of arrival and the island appeared to be located in a different time...

SOOO... If the move of the island changes its position in time aswell as its bearing.. the walah! whitmore has lost it again and good luck to him finding it.. also, if the island was moved before, then whitemore found it eventually again so i think the people that are grading the effectiveness of the best ways to hide an island are irelevant because its not about hte best way, its about the most probable way in which it is achieved given the possibilities and technology of the island! so to the people acting like the move of the island will present whitemore with the impossible task of ever finding it again are wrong. because he did find it! because he discovered the correct bearing! also, how he discovered the correct bearing and location could be due to past lost people who were given the exact bearing when they struck a deal with the others to let them off the island (walts father)
